I'm interested in starting my own podcast centered around political and social topics. technical wise this is what I'm trying to achieve,

1. i want to be able to play music in the background

2. i want live callers, seeing as it's only going to be my wife and I on two physical mics.

3. I'm starting out so, I want to be cost effective and not break the bank.

can anyone offer any help on what I can use to achieve such things. like what equipment do I need

I would use Skype and get audacity learn how to use audacity that's a free program and it does whatever you want. Make sure if you want to make money off of the music that it's legally free to use. As far as mics a blue yeti is a really good fairly expensive mic tho. I have a blue ice ball and another mic that came with my podcast kit.

I hear google hangouts is another way to make and record podcasts as well. With Skype you can create a number and have callers call in.

I just want to have some of my favorite music playing in the background, nothing special.

I was going to buy the 99.00 podcast kit that came with a mic, headphone, usb audio interface and a mixer. but then I saw that it only had one input for one microphone

The behringer podcast kit? You could just get another microphone and plug it to the laptop if it has another USB port open on your laptop/desktop.
