A case could be made that Bad Boy not only ran hip-hop in 1997, but also the pop world. They only released three albums (Life After Death, No Way Out and Harlem World) that year, but all three were smash hits that were filled with singles and album cuts that were essentially inescapable.

If you don't agree with the claim feel free to post evidence of any other hip-hop record label eclipsing the feats that Bad Boy achieved in '97.

It wasnt just '97. That run from 97-98 was fukking crazy. Had that huge grossing tour and everything. Then they STILL were dropping gold and platinum records even after their run was over up until about 2002/2003-ish when they started to fall off.

Edit: @Rapmastermind can u offer more on this? I know you know alot about bad boy

Not to mention Puffy was "producing" for other artist

Didn't he produced one of Jigga albums, I think it was "Vol. 1."

He was also scheduled to do Aaliyah's "One In a Million" album but the chemistry between her, Tim & Missy changed it

Yeah, I can't forget about '98. They slowed down that year but they still produced a lot of hits. However, I'd probably give that year to No Limit.

And that No Way Out tour was huge. It's crazy how these guys pretty much owned the entire year. B.I.G. had spring to summer locked down, Puff had summer to autumn locked down, and then Mase had the winter entering the new year locked down.

Cash Money and Aftermath both have arguably better runs.

To this day they have Kendrick and Drake/Nicki/Wayne etc.

I mean you didn't really qualify your question...you talking about sales or impact?

Bad Boy and No Limit ran it in 97-98 for sure. Even then though, without Biggie, most people felt that was just Pop rap. Yeah some good cuts for sure but a lot of it was crossover bullshyt, remaking Sting songs n shyt wtf.

Also, we would roast each other on who had to do Puffs parts on songs lol. He was corny even back then.

I can't call sales, but I can tell you that many other labels were "bigger" than bad boy was in 97. They arguably ran 97, but other labels from other eras were bigger. Death Row in 94 was insane. Way bigger than Bad boy. There are many others as well.
