Never had exactly the best relations (probably some undocumented time before slavery), but during Bacon's rebellion the non-upper class white folk had a little sense.

Bacon's rebellion was the first rebellion in the North American colonies in which discontented frontiersmen took part. A somewhat similar uprising in Maryland involving John Coode and Josias Fendall took place in 1689. The alliance between European indentured servants and Africans (a mix of indentured, enslaved, and Free Negroes) disturbed the colonial upper class. They responded by hardening the racial caste of slavery in an attempt to divide the two races from subsequent united uprisings with the passage of the Virginia Slave Codes of 1705.

In my opinion and through life experiences, behind closed doors people are who they've always been. Part of getting them to vote one way or the other was to convince that it was ultimately beneficial to them in the long run. So laws and policies were voted in, but people's personal feelings about other races of people have not changed.

i think we're gonna look back and realize that 1980-2010 was the apex of this country and those years aren't coming back. not saying race relations were great, but considering the racial history, i don't see anything getting better than that. there could never be a racial utopia in the current iteration of this country.
