Big Bang theory and evolution in nature "do not contradict" the idea of creation, Pope Francis has told an audience at the Vatican, saying God was not “a magician with a magic wand.” The Pope’s remarks on Monday to the Pontifical Academy of Sciences appeared to be a theological break from his predecessor Benedict XVI, a strong exponent of creationism.

“The beginning of the world is not the work of chaos that owes its origin to something else, but it derives directly from a supreme principle that creates out of love,” Pope Francis said. “The Big Bang, that today is considered to be the origin of the world, does not contradict the creative intervention of God; on the contrary, it requires it. Evolution in nature is not in contrast with the notion of [divine] creation because evolution requires the creation of the beings that evolve.”

The Pontiff said God created beings “and let them develop in accordance with the internal laws that he has given to each one.” He said: “When we read in Genesis the account of creation [we are] in danger of imagining that God was a magician, complete with a magic wand that can do all things. But he is not.”

Yep. And this is nothing new since past popes/priest always held this view and not only that were the first to support it before so called atheist. Which is why I say these Atheist vs Religious people on these subjects are plain retarded and usually don't know what they are talking about.

I don't know about the Big Bang theory; to me it challenges the belief of "God", but Evolution sure as hell doesn't challenge the belief of God. All Evolution is, is just the process of life on Earth changing/adapting. It doesn't say Evolution is responsible for the creation of Earth or the Universe. IMO the only thing Evolution challenges is the Adam and Eve story.

Either way both parties should just shut up and put an end to this argument.

:snoop:
Since when did the theory of evolution ever challenge the belief in "A" divine entity. Find the person. Find the argument.

Cats are always disingenuous with this it's like :beli:. Religious folks love using the arguments of deists when this topic comes up.

It doesn't say Evolution is responsible for the creation of Earth or the Universe.

The theory of evolution doesn't even take claim for the creation of Earth or the Universe? You're conflating two different ideas.

IMO the only thing Evolution challenges is the Adam and Eve story.

Which would be the main story of what church :smugfavre:

Notice that nowhere in the doctrine does Pope Francis say Adam and Eve DIDN'T take place. That's the most important statement missing from this article. He's just being a wordsmith.

Are you implying that I'm religious?

That's my main point!

And how am I conflating two ideas?

Your point?

I'm not talking about the church but a concept of God in general.

As mentioned, this isn't really anything new. Pope Francis is not the first Pope to say that evolution doesn't contradict theism. The Roman Catholic Church has pretty much recognized evolution and rejected intelligent design since the 1950's.

Postulating that evolution is a fact, it does conflict with a lot of ideas in the bible. Everything ranging from Adam and Eve to the idea that Man & Dinosaurs once roamed the land together, and a large portion of Genesis are all null and void.

And there's really no sense in compartmentalizing the bible. You can't sit there and say "This book is infallible, and everything in it is a fact unless you can prove part of it wrong, at which point everything else is still a fact except for the parts you prove wrong." Eventually the Bible just turns into this perpetually receding guise of truth.

Does it mean there's no God? Of course not. But there's enough information out there for any logical person to deduce that all of the notions of religion that have been created by mankind are terribly incorrect

That doesn't bode well for the church.

Embracing ambiguity in light of their history signals ambivalence about their own legitimacy.

that's why the conservative leaders are sweating bullets

this is what happens you have to embrace multiculturalism, globalism and scientific truths.

How so?

And there's really no sense in compartmentalizing the bible.

Why not if the bible tells you that "prophets" will come with FALSE information as a test?

Does it mean there's no God? Of course not.

You should tell that to atheists
