i have a firm believe its deep rooted in the abbreviation of the n-word but i will give that article a glance but yeah something to do with the french.

Funky came from black jazz musicians in the 40s I think. Meant to play your instrument harder and was called "funky" because players would often grimace their face while doing so, as if they smell something foul.
