Ron was a purest libertarian who you are right about

Rand is a pseudo libertarian who is somewhere between neo-con and libertarian but scares both groups away, decimating his support

I think Rand is just as Libertarian at heart..he was just young enough to take his father's advice to act Republican earlier to see if he could be seen as a legitimate R while completely inheriting Ron's Libertarian base. Instead, he has support of neither.

It's actually ironic. Ron Paul and his people had a falling out with the Libertarian Party is couple decades back over his socially conservative views. The faction they split from was heavily financed by the Koch brothers. Now after all this time the Kochs are mainstream and the Paul's are still treated like loons by the GOP.

Once you go against them, you are always against them. I know this first-hand. They'd rather finance a new suit than to make amends with someone who ever went against them.

Ron Paul wasn't really a true libertarian though. He's pro life and anti gay marriage, not to mention his rubbing shoulders with neo confederates and white nationalists. He just stressed his anti interventionalist positions much more fervently than Rand.

Rand is probably closer to a 'real' libertarian than Ron. I really doubt he gives a fukk about abortion or gay marriage. His waffling over the past 6 months on intervention is sad tbh.
