Former Secretary of State Colin Powell in a leaked personal email called the controversy surrounding the attacks on the American diplomatic compound in Benghazi, Libya, a "stupid witch hunt," but blamed both Hillary Clinton and the U.S. ambassador who was killed in the attack.
“Benghazi is a stupid witch hunt. Basic fault falls on a courageous ambassador who thoughts Libyans now love me and I am ok in this very vulnerable place,” Powell wrote in a December 2015 email to former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice about U.S. Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens, who died in the 2012 attacks, Buzzfeed reports.
Clinton, who was secretary of State during the event, has been scrutinized over her role in the attack by Republicans.
But defenders of Clinton, now the Democratic nominee for president, often dismiss criticism connected to the attack as an effort to undermine her presidential campaign.
Powell, writing to Rice, said Clinton shares the blame.
“But blame also rests on his leaders and supports back here. Pat Kennedy, Intel community, DS and yes HRC," Powell wrote, referring to Clinton's initials. "DS" is not identified.
"Completely agree," Rice responded.
