Black Single Mom Of Four Wins $188 Million Powerball
One of three winning tickets in Wednesday Powerball drawing belongs to Marie Holmes, a 26-year-old mother with four kids, one of whom has cerebal palsy.

Via WSOCTV reports:

Holmes worked at Walmart and McDonald’s but had quit to take care of her children.

When she was asked if she’s ready to deal with that much money, Holmes said, “I’m ready for it. I’m ready to embrace the change. I’m very grateful for what’s about to happen for my family.” (Watch interview.)

She said she will donate some of the money to her church and then put aside money for her children to go to college.

The other two winning tickets for Wednesday night’s Powerball were sold in Texas and Puerto Rico.

Somebody who stopped by a Shell station in southern Puerto Rico was potentially $100 million richer on Thursday, winning a share of a $564.1 million Powerball jackpot — the first winner outside the continental United States.

The winner, who will share the jackpot with whoever purchased a winning ticket in North Carolina and another in Texas, has not yet come forward. But several Puerto Ricans who bought tickets at the station in the coastal city of Ponce have stopped by to ask about who won, said employee Yomaris Rentas.

She had just started her shift at the 24-hour station early Thursday when the lottery machine began printing a message alerting her that the winning ticket had been sold there.

“I couldn’t believe it!” she said with a laugh. “We’re celebrating.”

The winner can claim the prize starting on Friday, choosing between a lump sum payment of $101.6 million or 30 payments over 29 years, said Antonio Perez Lopez, assistant secretary of the Puerto Rico Lottery.

“We are beyond thrilled with the news that we already have a multimillion-dollar winner just four months after Puerto Rico began selling Powerball tickets,” he said.

Neither of the other two winners has been identified either.

The Texas Lottery posted on Twitter that one of the winning tickets was sold at Appletree Food Mart in Princeton, a city about 40 miles north of Dallas.

Lottery officials in North Carolina said the other winning ticket was sold at a convenience store in Shallotte, a coastal town just north of the South Carolina border.

Lawyer to state: Powerball winner will wait to claim prize

spacer.gif

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — A lawyer has told North Carolina lottery officials that a client with a winning Powerball ticket is waiting to claim the prize.

Lottery officials said in a news release Friday that the lawyer said the client has a winning ticket for the $564 million jackpot. Officials were told "no immediate claim of the prize is planned." Officials did not identify the lawyer.

The ticket was sold at a convenience store in the coastal town of Shallotte.

Alice Garland, executive director of the N.C. Education Lottery, said lottery officials won't know for sure who the winner is until the winning ticket is brought to lottery headquarters.

That person will receive a third of the jackpot along with winners in Texas and Puerto Rico. Winners have 180 days to claim their prize.

Powerball jackpot winner cited for drug possession
BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — A Brunswick County woman who won a $188 million lottery jackpot earlier this year found herself in trouble with the law last night.

Brunswick County Sheriff’s deputies cited Marie Holmes, 26, with possession of marijuana, according to BCSO spokeswoman Emily Flax. According to the citation, Holmes was cited for having a half ounce or less of marijuana and drug paraphernalia at her home on Boverie Street in Shallotte. Danell Lamont McNeil, 31, and Damarius Dontrell Simmons, 21, received the same charges.

Flax said the drug charges came after investigators went to the home Holmes shares with Lamarr McDow to arrest him for violating the terms of his release in March on a $3 million bond. When they got to the home, Flax said deputies smelled marijuana and got a search warrant they executed around 10 p.m. She says that’s when they found the pot and a gun they say belongs to McDow.

Holmes, a Shallotte native, hit the $188 million Powerball jackpot in mid-February. Holmes took the lump sum payout of $127 million, which meant after taxes she wound up with nearly $88 million.

Holmes, McNeil and Simmons are due in court on Sept. 8, according to the citation.
