Deflecting what? The china ban was Jan 31st. Even we knew about that when it happened. Democrat leaders were publicly encouraging counter intuitive practices AFTER that. It's obviously a bad look and that's why CNN/MSNBC cut it off, it basically was ether. Biden can not go on stage in November and say Trump should have shut down the country in January if Biden is on record saying the opposite in February. No the main criticism was why didn't they start getting testing prepared and medical equipment secured and ready to distribute. It was widely acknowledged that while the Coronavirus wasn't here yet it was eventually going to get here at which point it would be wise to have a plan in place. Meanwhile Trump was flat saying it would never get here and when it does it would be quickly contained so no planning was done and we were left to scramble for tests and equipment which put us behind testing and lead to the virus spreading more.

Upto mid March the West was still living a normal life but the people don't have same access to briefings as the POTUS.
