Thats exactly what i was thinking Headhunters era Herbie. But it makes sense because he was infatuated with Patrice Rushen at this time who was making funk jazz exactly like this in the late 70s (check out "Shout it out and Before the dawn)

For a guy that was around 18 at the time, this is excellent sounds polished asf
