Cofounder of Reddit: “the biggest sham is that we have somehow identified these types of [DEI] goals with not being meritocratic. Those of us who’ve been out here building multi billion-dollar companies with an eye towards having diversity, equity, and inclusion, we’re hiring for greatness”

Back in the day when companies were embracing DEI policies, I had to sit down one of my coworkers and explain that DEI didn't lower the hiring bar for minorities, that instead DEI opened the doors wider to let everyone get the same interview and hire the best one.

i thought it evaluated people based on the color of their skin? Call it what it is
4/42

jynxprado.bsky.social
Did you know fact: there are companies who literally racially profile and avoid hiring black people if they're too black or don't hire latinos if they're too latino, or if they are too Asian or just not white enough? DEI did not hire out of skin but to hire to avoid that kind of racism.

I keep waiting for Alexis to turn out to be like every other douchebag tech bro, and he just keeps...not.
6/42

darthd00bius.bsky.social
He's pretty douchey about some things, just not this.
7/42

vanni45.bsky.social
Wild idea: maybe meritocracy includes talent that doesn’t look exactly like the last guy who got funded.
8/42

usmcwizard.bsky.social
Now there's a thought...
9/42

axidentaliberal.bsky.social
Diversity isn’t just the right thing to do
It’s good for business

Wonderful words and a phenomenal philosophy.

DEI Initiatives were not put in place to ensure lower-qualified minorities would be hired instead of more highly-qualified white people.

I dislike reddit but their co-founder is right. Seeking greatness has never stopped.
Its just that some white people are not as qualified. And rather than stepping up to a challenge, they whine and cry about losing their privilege.

I'm not a regular user of Reddit, but I have visited the site and didn't see anything that should cause alarm. I think the fascist warmongering Trump clowns are using you as a distraction.

spin4srv.bsky.social
I've been involved in hiring and I never ever looked to hire 'the best person'. I _always_ looked to hire the first person who:
1. could do the job
2. get along with the team
3. no red flags
'do the job' may carry extremely high requirements. Equity/Diversity interests don't lower them.
15/42

9thof9.bsky.social
Or maybe they are about to shake you down for $$$
16/42

themerckxproject.bsky.social
This is, imo, the approach Target "should" have taken.
17/42

ilovesoup223.bsky.social
He’s always got something good to say
18/42

dayanapecanty.bsky.social
Hmm, interesting take… I love the idea of hiring for greatness, but diversity and inclusion can be part of that greatness too, bby. Feels like he’s missing a piece of the puzzle.
19/42

tedium24x7.bsky.social
And he's married to Serena Williams, so -
20/42

dayanapecanty.bsky.social
Exactly—and you’d think being married to Serena would make him shine brighter on inclusion. Life’s funny that way.
21/42

dcmfox.bsky.social
One of the best sites on the internet hands down
22/42

lealeander.bsky.social
Is he the one who is Serena's husband?
23/42

lynn101.bsky.social
But are you still including DEI? Many are not. They are kissing the fat

ass.

darrkjames.bsky.social
How can women of color be married to these shytstains

28/42

millie29.bsky.social
Exactly. Monoculture is the death of innovation. You never want to stack your team with ppl who could be clones.
29/42

billbodabbinz.bsky.social
Companies may have the intention of hiring for greatness, but if the people you're hiring aren't great, the company will never reach that goal. No matter how much you polish a turd its still a turd.
30/42

rakista.bsky.social
Ah yes, Reddit which allowed perverts to share underage peeping tom photos for half-a-decade before doing anything talking about greatness.
31/42

its-its.bsky.social
Seems shocking that a co-founder of reddit said this. That platform has some dark corners. I have a guy’s name on reddit just to keep the abuse at bay.
32/42

piecederesister.bsky.social
Every platform can be abused by those determined to abuse it.
And they all are.
33/42

Yes! That’s what I’ve been saying

Just get off platforms that don’t support your values. Why are we helping these guys get richer?
37/42

mintyone.bsky.social
If he thinks so. I remember when they fired the CEO because she was not a man.
38/42

bettyspaghetti56.bsky.social
Always. DEI is meant to expand greatness - to look for it where you don’t typically look, to expand out, find fresh new perspectives.
There’s a reason the bottom 80% of companies are multiracial, but the boards and executive leaderships maybe hit 20% diversity, INCLUDING WHITE WOMEN
39/42

darrkjames.bsky.social
Ah yes, the same Reddit who banned me for life for responding to death threats from magas with “ bad words”
The bastion of free ( hate) speech
