hegel was a german philosopher who is famously known for his philosophy of history. long and short of it hegelian dialectic is the belief that our ideas form a path to the absolute truth
more interestingly he was very influential on karl marx (who was in a group called the Young Hegelians
) who sort of defined himself in opposition with dialectical materialism ie. history is a product of conflicting social forces.
