I know about the black cowboys. The fact that he's in Utah is probably the main thing.

I would never go because I don't wish to be surrounded by people like that but it isn't hard to find black families that have a generational history of partaking in "southern" activities such as farming, bull riding, horse breeding, racing stock cars, etc., and aren't whitewashed. But I completely understand why people expected much different from this guy. Having only ever lived in southern states and also having most of my family rooted in the south, I don't judge based on participation in such activities, I have to see how one engages with more serious matters such as politics, social issues, economics, etc. to get a legitimate understanding of where they are.
