so we all read this andre 3000 interview in the nytimes:

http://www.nytimes.com/2014/08/31/arts/music/andre-3000-is-moving-on-in-film-music-and-life.html

it was very dope. but remember when the writer said this:

On the 2003 double album “Speakerboxxx/The Love Below,” which has been certified 11 times platinum, he effectively abandoned rapping altogether in favor of tender singing, long before melody had become hip-hop’s coin of the realm. In many ways, André 3000 anticipated the sound and shape of modern hip-hop ambition.

hold up though. if we are going down that road, what about these facts:

50 cent sang before Love Below dropped, on GRODT. and GRODT was a bigger album than Love Below. Love Below sold 11 platinum but remember, thats a double cd so in reality it sold 5.5. GRODT is at 8.3 million. and 50 brought melody to hip hop imho. or at the very least re introcuded it and made it a mainstay.

it might seem like a small thing but seems 50 is being written out of history. 50 was King OF NY from 2003-2007. lets not forget that. i love Outkast but lets not keep giving them and kanye credit for everything dope in rap. sometime people that arent universally loved deserve their props.

Yup .. Ja Rule and Nelly were just changing their voice intonation ... and happen to be melodic on their hooks.

The article isn't incorrect either .. cuz if you read it in context they are talking about STRAIGHT up Singing ... maybe not hitting notes .. but just creating a catchy upbeat .. up tempo hip hop album.

Basically what Pharrell 'Happy' was ... and Robin Thicke's 'blurred lines' before they each made it respectively.
