Proposed Washington State Law Would Create 32-Hour Workweek - Ogletree Deakins

the Washington State Legislature seeks to implement a 32-hour workweek for nonexempt Washington-based workers. If the proposal were to become law, employers would be required to pay overtime compensation to nonexempt employees whose workweeks exceed 32 hours.

Senate Bill (SB) 6516 proposes to amend RCW 49.46.130, the Washington law that establishes a 40-hour workweek in the state. Because the proposal would amend but not replace the existing law, the current exemptions would remain applicable—and none have been amended by the proposed bill. Instead, the bill’s proposed changes merely—but monumentally—revise the references in RCW 49.46.130 from a 40-hour workweek to a 32-hour workweek.

The lead cosponsor of SB 6516 is Washington State Senator Joe Nguyen. In several interviews, Senator Nguyen seems to view the proposal as a “conversation” starter and a “concept” to begin discussing. Because it appears to be a preliminary measure, we do not expect the proposal to pass, but we will continue to follow SB 6516 closely and provide legislative updates as necessary on the firm’s Washington blog.

im baffled that we still work 40hr work weeks. So much time in corporate america we're half assing and bullshyttin. Prolly could get the same amount of work done in 4 hrs everyday

but we have to stay 8 hrs, so we move slow to look productive.

would love to see research on how reduced hours affects productivity

:martin: Like I believe the same people that believe Hard Worker/High Work Ethic is an admirable character trait (That they can exploit and abuse like a motherfukker) are willing to shorten the work week.

Yall just begging for the automation of your jobs and more robots.

These companies ain't gonna let the government cut their work hours back. These jobs still need to get done and be done.

Ya u can work 32 hrs dont worry. The robot will come in and fill the rest of your shifts..shyt matter of fact...dont bother coming back...we got you covered champ...enjoy your less work heavy schedule .

:mjlol:

Not advocating for living at work either but damb need to be a realistic balance...work has to get done and it will with or without you.

Choose your side carefully....big business and capitalism doesn't take that L very easy or often.

You can get things done faster, but every field doesn't operate that way. Medicine and Finance are two of them where 32 hours a week isn't cutting it. Both have people working 60 and they're legitimately busy over those 60 hours.

You’re going to have to explain how working 32 hours will lead to jobs becoming automated faster... it’s a lot of European countries that don’t do 40 hour work weeks
