Its just to protect against glass and debris.
The idea is that if a tornado is going to sling some glass, it will probably throw it further than the wall so you want your head as close to the wall as possible.

Exactly. Tornadoes like that, if you arent underground or in something built reinforced to handle those winds, youre pretty much finished. People who jumped off the upper floors of the wtc hit earth around 210 mph. They really don’t do this anymore. Tornado warning = school closing and kids getting sent home... they rather for you to die under your own roof for liability purposes.... but back in the day.... it was straight your mama jokes and feeling on girls while being stuck in that hallway for an hour or more.... parents were like... shiiitt, the school building probably safer than my crib... keep they asses there until this shyt is over with
