A little off-topic but both my parents picked a little cotton as kids. They both grew up on farms down south (Mississippi and Arkansas) during the 50's and that was just something folks did to bring in money. My mom told me it was horrible though, apparently the cotton has little pricks on it so if you are a noob you'll get stuck all the time and after a whole day of picking in the hot sun you wouldn't have much to show for it.
