It's all a money decision, I'm sure you will be able to use your own headset if you want to. This allows sony to be in the social media space via chat, it ensures everyone has access to talk online. The building of material(BOM) for that ear bud and mic, is probably 3 bucks since its mono at that.

nikkas really use kinect for in game chat

Ain't no way in hell I can understand what anyone says through chat over my surround sound, so that kinect shyt wouldn't work imo.

I can't wait till Turtle Beach drops a headset for the PS4 though If I could get the X41's I got now to work with it somehow, that would be better.
