So....It appears that a savvy customer was paying attention to his router traffic. Every time he changed the channel, his television reported back to LG what channel he changed to. If he hooked up a USB drive to the television, it reported back to LG the names of the files on that drive. This is regardless of whether he had the "collection of watching info" turned on or off....hmmmmmmm


Apparently LG responded saying, & I'm paraphrasing, "blah, blah, it's in the fine print."

These new world technology advances are getting nosey as fukk, can't even trust our own home items these days. Going to have to check if my TV does this, it's a LG as well. It's not connected though since I use my HTPC for movies & stuff, and it runs Linux......I guess if true (swap it for a Samsung) this helps me solidify my decision to give my smart tv to my moms. I don't think the Koreans will be too interested in her viewing habits that mostly consist of daytime court shows, retro TV channels, and The Walking Dead.

Sad really....fukked up that this is what these companies have gotten to: If you shop online, they try to track every little thing you do. What you click on, what you hover over, how long you linger....It's like rolling to ASDA (Walmart equivalent here in the UK), but then you notice that the greeter is now quietly following you, pen & paper in hand tracking manz aisle movements. Then a next man (Google Analytics) joins the club, then another (Facebook), then another (Ocado/ QuantCast), and then another one licks you in the face with a garbage consumeristic (new word) survey (Foresee).
Then you go to another store, but your entourage follows you around, continuously recording everything you do

But it's ok, they don't know your name. they might glance at a credit card or driver's license if you've got your wallet or purse open for a few seconds, but they totally wouldn't even dream of considering the possibility of perhaps thinking about writing that down. Now with your state of the art new Kinect or Smart TV, they'll follow manz home, too. The Kinect of course keeps tabs on the livingroom. A Smart TV in the bedroom snuggles in and starts primping itself for an evening of sweet, sexy advertising. A tablet sits patiently in the bathroom, eager to learn if you should consider trying something from Citrucel's SmartFiber™ product line.

I have the 55LM7600. I don't really care if it reports back what I watch because all I really watch on it are cable news shows and sports. Everything is plugged up to my av receiver and comes through the HDMI port anyway. I don't imagine it knows what channel my cable box is on.

Man with the way things are going EVERYTHING (with the exception of some Coli posters) is getting "smart", with smart being defined as trivial conveniences for the user, & your personal data for the owner. "The owner?" you ask? "Surely I'm the owner since I paid for it! .....Incorrect answer breh......The owner of any computer is the one who controls it, & these are all embedded computers that take control away from the nominal "owner" i.e. your bytch asss. Personally I'm not a huge gadget enthusiasts & I don't want "smart" devices all up in my crib....... I prefer to control my computers myself....FUKK that SKYNET revolution!

Someone needs to come up with a group of companies that have it written in their code of conduct that they will not try and scavenge information/sell customer info to advertisers. The same goes for companies outsourcing call centers to icantspeakenglishistan (serious cuunntss ringing off my phone all day today cos my mobile contract due up soon). I will pay good money to not get hassled with this crap & to be able to speak to someone who I can understand when I have a problem.

I think it has to do with retail conflict i.e Competition. If your competition's keeping tabs on its customers & getting advertising money for it, wouldn't you want to get in on some of that action? Or dangle a carrot e.g over here in the UK....you got Car insurance companies doing it with the whole "Let us record and monitor your driving habits, and you'll get a discount." approach"........Let us record and monitor your viewing habits, and you'll get 5 channels of your choice," or unlock some other crap ass feature or some such thing. The games industry is already doing it. Want to play SimCity 5 without an Internet connection? What are you, a filthy pirate? Burn in hell you criminal scum, or make the connection, and welcome aboard, friend

EDIT: Look at the MAJOR gaming consoles now. You pretty much can't use them without an internet connection. The first thing it asks when you turn it on is to make an account...TVs & appliances will soon be that way too...imagine needing wfi for your toaster otherwise its no go

Now the concept of stuff having an ethernet port and some network stuff is cool... *IF* it is strictly to be used on a LAN. Ex: SNMP traps and other management stuff. But the way things are going it's all about cloud stuff and spying & tracking and all this is BS.

Now it all makes sense hidden wifi devices hmmm.......I wondered why my can opener & my toaster seemed to be spending so much time together lately. In fact, just the other day, I even caught them making out behind the microwave!

The TVs were found to collect the channels being watched even when data collection was disabled. They also collected the names of files saved in an external USB hard drive plugged into the TV as well as the TV's unique identification information.

all these smart TVs do this shyt to an extent if you think about.

my shyt makes recommendations on the channels we watch since my DirecTV receiver connects directly though it. shyt my wife and I like and kids like show up as recommended viewings or some shyt.

But it's not ad related, just tv shows.
