It's nothing more than a small router...it's called a MITM attack. Basically, you kill the connection, then establish your router as the wifi router, so essentially everyone connects to you. Then you're able to see all the data being sent to and from, etc. I use to do a lot of this in college, but for more malicious reasons then I'd rather get into.
