It's nothing more than a small router...it's called a MITM attack. Basically, you kill the connection, then establish your router as the wifi router, so essentially everyone connects to you. Then you're able to see all the data being sent to and from, etc. I use to do a lot of this in college, but for more malicious reasons then I'd rather get into.

i may or may not have stolen some sensitive info with that + wireshark

Easy... Get a wireless AP (not a range extender) name the SSID something like "free public WiFi" then download wire shark to a computer on the same network to monitor traffic. A lot of sensitive data "passwords" are not SSL and are sent over as clear text. This is just conjecture though.
