They were punching in since the golden era Bro.

Big Punisher is all punch in's and that was documented in the Fredro Starr 'The art of dialgoue' Interview.

Biggie punched in too, I saw Wayne punch in for some Carter documentary, There are very few Jadakiss's one take one shot type dudes.

You are right though. I feel if you dont have the skills to go at least 8-12 bars before you break then you should not be no type of Rapper at all.
ODB (R.I.P.) was punching like Mike Tyson in 1988.

I agree. Not just breath control, but it takes memory as well, gotta remember the whole verse (unless you recording with the paper/phone in front of you reading, which is ass and it actually makes it sound less organic, imo). When the punching-in is done stylistically, like the dude, I can't remember his name but it was basically his thing, that shh!t is okay. Hoodrich Pablo Juan? Idk, one of them type dudes...one of the dude's who Soulja Boy jacked his style lol

When you can clearly hear it and it's obvious because the sound/tone/pitch of his voice is different each time, that shhit is super duper sloppy sounding to me. A lot of fans don't even notice it like that tho apparently..I hear that shh!t all thru Nas and Hitboy's albums...and Nas TBE imo, but yeah..

That's cold blooded.

All the most legendary verses were done with a paper right in front of the rappers eyes. I get what you are saying but from a humble former amateur rapper it is damn near impossible to memorize your whole verse and cadence right after you wrote it. It benefits you like a stand up comic to have your notes ready for when memory lapses.

So many classic hiphop pictures with the Rapper, the paper and the microphone all there spitting his or her verse. You are asking for Einstein brainpower :russ:

Yeah tone has to match! If the tone doesn't match it sounds awful. As an artist and recording engineer myself, there are many ways of getting great sounding drop-ins if the engineers take their time; overdubbing, retakes to match tone/energy and post production to name some techniques.

The issue is some engineers are lazy and so are the artists to make the extra effort.

That's why nigs sound stiff bro, lol. Nah, it's just my opinion champ, I hear you. Jay-z tho, for example...don't even write his shhit...and if he does he is not holding any paper and shh!t in the vocal booth when recording, and he got "a arch in his flow...all sorts of flows" to quote him, a huge part of that is because it's just coming straight from memory, it's natural sounding. Same with Biggie. Same with Lupe (tho I think he's adopted the punch-in shh!t too now...but at least it sounds clean). Etc..

Yeah when the verse is memorized you can rap it with more conviction. Kendrick punches to rap in different voices and that I understand. Moneybagg is another one with horrible punches that makes his music unlistenable. Dababy punches in but he's actually good at it, plus he could actually one take his verses and write better if he wanted to

Yeah I hear that.

Beanie Sigel said in an interview. Jay saw him writing his verse in a studio and threw away his notebook and said he should do it in his head lol.

I call suspect on more of the intricate rhymes Jay and Big tend to do, that's hard to pull off coming without pen and paper to see your rhyme pattern, subject on point, and etc. Also not Jay but Biggie has been caught using pen and paper. RA the Rugged Man told DJ Vlad Biggie used a pen and pad when writing his verse for their record.

Biggie always went home to use a pen and paper in my opinion because he has never recorded a verse in any collaboration while the other artists were there. He always went home. The Lox, BTNH, Brooklyns Finest, etc, Biggie always went home first then came back to record by then you could memorize anything. I give Jay more credit for coming off the top when writing with no pen or paper. Biggie is far more suspect lol.

But hey they are both mega skilled at rapping however their formula lol, the new generation need to at least master the art of writing though. :hubie:

Jay Z does not freestyle. He writes in his head ,memorized the whole verse and then records it in one take. Lil Wayne writes 4 to 8 bars at a time, and keeps punching until the verse is done. When Wayne does songs with somebody good like Eminem, he disappears for 3 hours ,writes his verse down and then comes back to the studio when it's memorized. You can hear on certain songs that he stays on topic and his tone is the same throughout. The Wayne clones like thug could never rap that good because Wayne doesn't freestyle. He thinks about what he's gonna say first. Lil Flip is the only rapper that was really freestying 16 bar verses on studio albums

Engineers don’t give af about you feeling like you have something to prove. Even if you waste studio time doing multiple one takes, they’re gonna piece together the best sounding parts from each take anyway. You can practice your breath control on your own time.
