But, I'm also a fan of Bad Brains/adolescents/7 seconds/minor threat. Grew up on naked ray gun, peg boy and other chicago punk groups.

I lean toward poppier sounding stuff than what I consider super-hardcore stuff (Cro-Mags, sick of it all and a lot of the new york stuff from the 80s).

lately, I've been venturing into more melodic hardcore (rites of spring, etc), garage punk and old garage music.

I'll come back and post some shyt later.

Rites Of Spring is awesome, all that stuff coming out of DC, that Dischord stuff was really fukkin cool.. personally, I really fukk with early 80s hardcore/punk, that dischord stuff, and the more "post-hardcore" shyt like Drive Like Jehu and Unwound a lot of the mid-late 90's the most. I like some of the heavier New York hardcore soundin stuff but when im in the mood to listen to non hip hop, i definitely go back and listen to the more "punk" soundin stuff. I don''t really fukk with that type of music like I do the more punk soundin stuff.. I'm from Mass, and while we have a lot of hardcore/punk history, our non "hipstery" hardcore scene leans more towards that "heavy" sound and is super macho and bro-ish and Im not about that so I never connected with that.. so I always fukked with the other stuff way more.

Agree on dischord. I started buying vinyl, and two pieces I picked up recently were Minor Threat "out of step" (not the original, sadly -- I think second pressing) and the Holy Rollers LP, which was a little later. I like government issue and scream, too - but then you're getting into paying more than I want to for vinyl (I think).

Also agree on the Mass sound. SS Decontrol, gang green ... all too thrash-ish for me. I love the mass sound from about 5 years later (Dino Jr, Lemonheads, Pixies, salem 66).

I've gone back and listened to the first Jawbreaker album a lot lately. Huge album for me.

Then there's the whole rockabilly/garage/punk stuff from the pacific northwest. Girl Trouble, Gas huffer, U-men, Kill Sybil, derelicts, fastbacks (one of my favorites growing up) and a million other bands that came before grunge.

So that's been my last six months in punk (and punk related) stuff.

It seems like most of the people in this thread listen to mainly older punk/hc.Other than some essential records, I find myself leaning towards newer bands. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the originators of the sound, but some of it is just not for me.
