been listening to Killer Mike's R.A.P. Album. dope album all around.

for some reason i never listened to Company Flow or El-P's music. for some reason i always confused them with Atmosphere and them and thought the music would kinda sound like that.

where should i start? i'm very impressed with the Killer Mike album and i kinda feel stupid for sleeping on his music. where should i start?

he's much more aggressive both sonically and lyrically. Although they've associated in the same circles you can easily see how his NYC upbringing colored his whole aesthetic. Check out Fantastic Damage, the production on it is sick.

Yeah like many said, check Funcrusher Plus and especially The Cold Vein. His work on that album was phenomenal, plus Vast Aire spazzed on many tracks, but he been garbage since.

If you want to get into El-P i'd check out Fantastic Damage first.

There was some fukking curve between that and I'll Sleep When You're Dead.

Also, lol. Cop the fukking instrumental CD of I'll Sleep When You're Dead.

That shyt is bananas.

thanks for the suggestions everyone. i checked out Funcrusher Plus and the Cannibal Ox...

not exactly what i was looking for. it wasn't bad but it sounded like some "traditional" underground hip hop from that era which is cool. but does he have stuff that sounds like the Killer Mike album? is that a new style he has or was there some transitional work he did between the late 90s underground style and the Killer Mike album?

EDIT: re-listening to the Cannibal Ox - The Cold Vein and i'm starting to see it.

part of another post i made in another thread.

...this one on the other hand, production sounded like something fresh and Killer Mike seemed more focused than on Pledge 3 and i think it has something to do with having one producer for the whole album. It seems like a lot of times when there's one beatmaker for a whole project, or even if it's a couple of beatmakers, having one main producer providing the bulk of the album and overseeing the project (and maybe directing the guest beatmakers to tailor their beats to the vision) seems to work best. it gives a certain continuity and cohesiveness. and in turn i think it helps the rapper get more focused. the mixing also came out pretty well. a slight problem i had with the Pledge series is that sometimes it seemed like certain sounds or vocals weren't mixed right although ironically Pledge 3 which i wasn't feeling as much had a better mix in my opinion.

anyway, this is my favorite Killer Mike album so far and best album of the year so far. my only complaint about the beats is that there is this one sound (sounds like some sort of warped synth/bass, the one that sounds like the beginning of "9th Wonder" by Digable planets) that El-P kinda overdosed on at times. but after that, El-P really impressed me. he impressed me so much i had to check out some of his other work. What i've noticed when i compared this album to his other projects is that the other ones, the beats are more "free". he goes way more to the left with them and they seem more "improvised' and raw. it's a slightly different style because on R.A.P. Music, his style seems more focused and less abstract. and it's more melodic too. it's not necessarely better or worse. just different but i admit i prefer his style on the Killer Mike project. but i really enjoyed "I'll Sleep When You're Dead" though...

one thing i would add in regards to El-P's style is that Alchemist's style on Covert Coup is kinda similar vibes at times. not the same energy of course but they both seem like some depressing lo-fi futuristic type shyt at times (except that El-P's stuff has more "adrenaline").
