Putin's #1 objective in Syria has been to support his ally Assad. Always has been. Anything that keeps the heat off Assad is in Putin's interests.
If that means avoiding attacking ISIS so they can become the bigger "boogeyman", that's what he'll do.
If that means bombing out all the moderate anti-Assad groups instead of bombing ISIS, that's what he'll do.
If that means suddenly diverting attention to ISIS (once them and Assad are the only two options left), and then blaming the West for them, that's what he'll do.
Look it up - that's what he's been doing the whole time. Until recently, Putin hadn't done shyt against ISIS, and had done everything possible to screw over everyone except Assad who might have been a legitimate alternative to ISIS.
