Its right above you in the post, watch it again. He catches that thing flatfooted if hes on the one next to the pylon.
I was watching it again with my goggles on and you have something in that the ball would settle near the pylon spot, but it is also in the way where it it is too far out of bounds along the sideline border. It is difficult to completely tell without the TV camera to let you see more. I think I can explain it a bit here:
This is the frame that explain it the best IMO. The ball is dropping more vertically here, but with the shadowing of the football, it already looks like it is almost completely out of bounds. The ref is the closest person to the ball and he is still looking up, DJ looking up, Viking #24 looking up, and the ball has almost crossed the white border completely to the player/media side where the ref is. This here is too high and too out of bounds.
Now, the ball didn't stray too far to the left here, and you're correct it ends up somewhere near the pylon for the landing spot as you stated.
On this frame, it's very near about where it lands according to the ball's shadow. Unfortunately, It is still more out of bounds IMO. DJ would have to stretch out but I don't think he makes the catch. Those borders are about a body's worth of width and DJ would have to remain on the playable part of the field somehow.
If it was just a few feet more inbounds DJ could make that catch on the correct route. But I think it was just thrown too far.
Yes I was caffeinated for this post.
