Real talk, has anyone actually sat down and watched Red Notice?

I have a friend in the industry who told me so much fukkery about this flick. They started shooting it with less than half a script and padded out the rest with incoherent riffing by the actors. Netflix is getting fleeced by Dwayne and his lackey director and/or there is some suspected funny bookkeeping.

I love Tarantino and I get where he's coming from but he over romanticizes the concept of the old "movie star."

I know that's part of his passion. It's why he used his films to breathe new life in a number of washed movie stars careers.

That's the thing though. He criticized superhero movies before saying people are going to see the characters themselves and not the actors.

That they were what ruined the idea of movie stars.

The mystique. I think he's incorrect. I do believe that Hollywood has been stripped of his mystique. Not because of comic book movies but because of social media. An unprecedented amount of access exists now making celebrities painfully human and flawed.

No longer larger than life.


You can't tell me that Marvel didn't turn Robert Downey Jr into a full fledged movie star. That's just one example. Not to mention the plethora of well established talent and movie stars that have starred in those pictures.

From Robert Redford to Anthony Hopkins to Sly Stone to Angela Basset to his buddies Sam Jackson and Kurt Russel, and so forth.

They do the same thing with the long establish movie veterans/movie stars that he does. Who really has Tarantino films turn into a movie star?

Tim Roth and Micheal Madsen as much as I love them don't fit the bill. Whats interesting about Tarantino films is that after Pulp Fiction, people primarily saw Taratino films because of him. Tarantino. He was ultimately their biggest star.

If that first Iron Man movie failed or performed subpar the MCU wouldn't became a culture phenomenon.

And culture phenomenons are what inform the zeitgeist. Streaming is still in its infant stage. If anything its rewriting the Zeitgeist and as it matures it'll have a more pronounced role im popular culture.

The reason he doesnt think it's in the zeitgeist is because he doesn't participate.

He's not going to. He's doing one more and thats it. That video store clerk inside him is very much alive. He's going to watch the movies he thinks got it right from the eras he thought were best in the one way he feels all movies should be viewed. All isolated from the tides of modern culture.

Ultimately, he's one of the greatest ever and has left a unique legacy. He's falling out of love with his wife and yearns for the days where he first met her.

In its way, it's fitting as his style of movie making helped to define an era now gone. It's the way of the dinosaur. If he wants to retire with a swan song with the last of what he identifies as movie magic, he's earned that right.

I just think his comments are inaccurate and he's feeling the effects of self exile. Just because the people he keeps in his circle and the personal movie nerd club he curates feels unaffected by it all doesn't make him correct.

It makes him out of touch.

Gal Gadot is as dry as turkey jerky so that's whatever.

The problem with his argument, as evidenced by some of the replies in this thread, is that often, people conflate winning awards with quality.

Pointing out that movies on streamers have been nominated for and won awards isn't really the flex people think it is, since movies that don't actually matter much in the long run with shyt all the time. "The Artist" won best picture, for example, and no one has cared about that movie before or since it won.

The problem with these movies is that a lot of time, they're really just developed to fulfill a spot in a conveyor belt of content, as opposed to being its own, individual thing. And when you're done watching it, most of these platforms are so focused on leading you to what you'll watch next that you barely get time to absorb and process what you just watched. shyt launches with little pre or post release promo, since they assume the algorithm while handle that when you log in the week that it comes out, and is quickly replaced by something else in the algorithm a couple of weeks later.

shyt isn't catching on in a larger cultural way because it's flat out not designed to.

Say what you wanna say about Taratino and his use of the n-word; when it comes to artistry in the cinema genre of art he is telling the truth.

I remember when people kept asking me if I used a tablet to make art and I told them that shyt isn't art and if I'm not into animation then it's pointless to use applied art instead of traditional art.

Fast forward we in 2023 and everybody is fukking artist now. So I feel Taratino.

Pure greed. The move for longevity would be shorter movies and lower prices. Instead they’re trying to make up for less movies with longer movies, longer previews. Higher prices. It’s going to make them money in the short term but kill the entire industry long term.

Ie cabs being destroyed by Uber. Blockbuster by streaming . When you have a monopoly and you take advantage, and don’t address the gripes people scream about, it WILL come back to bite you. New technology will fill that void and make you a dinosaur

My dumbass watched Red Notice KNOWING it was gonna be some bullshyt it's the textbook over budgeted, ABC plot, simple action movie

And yes The Rock has been finessing Hollywood for damn near a decade now. He's flipped his recognizability into a fleet of these factory issue movies

You touched on another point that's actually been a problem with Hollywood for a while too. Will Ferrell killed comedy writing in movies because his style of "just adlib until we have enough" has taken over like a virus. These nikkas will shyt out a skeleton script then let nikkas go on long ass adlib rants that they just edit down. Most Kevin Hart movies are like this

I wouldn't necessarily call it greed. This is usually an issue with directors based on the pattern over noticed

What typically happens is a rising director makes a successful film, the studios get excited and throw money behind them for new projects so they can make more money, in turn the directors feed into their self indulgence and newfound freedom and start demanding that their entire vision needs to be seen. This is how every single time a blowout director's next film ends up being longer than the one that made them famous


Hell Tarantino's a great example. Pulp Fiction is an hour longer than Reservoir Dogs and Jackie Brown is longer than Pulp Fiction. Kill Bill originally was a 4 and a half hour long movie that Tarantino refused to cut down, so the studio let him make it 2 movies

You're seeing it now with A24. When they were on the come up they had these short but effective movies, but now that they're poppin they're letting nikkas go crazy with the run times. Just about every recent A24 has been pushing 2.5-3 hours

And wasn't The Irishman 4 hours? Scorses's upcoming film is also 4 hours the issue with your point isn't greed it's self indulgent directors with overblown budgets.

Now on the other hand greed is what the MCU has been doing with phase 4 where they've hacked and reshot these movies to shyt and had them at just under two hours so they can get more runtimes and the movies themselves have suffered drastically

This is such nonsense that people say. There is nothing in the times. Social people still go see movies. Anti-social people don't want to and claim "times have changed" as an excuse for their anti-social behavior.

People were able to watch movies in their homes decades ago. Businesses have become more powerful and are turning people into sheep. Some fall for it, others don't. That's what's changed. The times remain the same throughout history.

I would say going to the movies is the lowest form of social behavior. Leave your home to go to a dark room and watch something with people but mostly in silence is social? Barely IMO.
You usually have to add a real social activity like getting a meal or drink before or after to make it social.

When you put it that way everything sounds anti social. Going to a concert to stand around listening to music not being able to hear other people. Going to an arena to watch a game waiting for your team to score.


Movies are social because like those other events you go with friends or you meet like minded people there.

Sitting in your house talking over a head set is the lowest form of social interaction.
