heres a question...i always wondered why the dude who killed hyman roth in the airport (rocco lampone?) went on a suicide mission like that

why the hell would he do that :heh:

edit: found this :ehh:

After Michael's failed assassination attempt at his lake house, Michael suspects the assassins would be killed on the property by someone very close to the family--someone on the inside. He tells Tom, "All our people are businessmen; there loyalty is base on that." When the assassins actually turn up dead, it confirms for Michael that Rocco was in on it. He never reveals to Rocco that he knew, because Michael subscribes to the belief, "keep your friends close but your enemies closer." Michael sends Rocco to Miami to kill Roth, knowing Rocco won't come out alive, since Roth is under heavy guard. Rocco kills Roth and the FBI kills Rocco; just what Michael wanted. And Rocco was too stupid to realize he was played.

still dont get why rocco would do it, but :yeshrug:

He didn't think it was a suicide mission. The Feds shot him while he was trying to get away. He hoped he could hit him up quick and maybe get badly wounded but still survive. Guys like him consider themselves invincible.

from wiki:

He subsequently moves to Nevada with the family and arranges security for the Lake Tahoe compound, but is unable to prevent the failed attempt on Michael's life by two mobsters hired by Michael's rival Hyman Roth. When the time comes to take revenge on Roth, Rocco opines that assassinating him would be "difficult, not impossible", and is personally entrusted with the hit. Disguised as a reporter, Rocco successfully approaches Roth at Miami International Airport and shoots him, but despite the ensuing panic and confusion, he is in turn shot and killed by FBI agents while fleeing the scene.

so it seems like rocco was the fool who came up with the idea in the first place... he thought dressing like a reporter and disappearing in the commotion was going to work :francis:

I finally got around to watching the Godfather Epic (which is outstanding btw; probably won't watch it the traditional way anymore). And I'm wondering... Do you think Sollozzo goes after Vito if Vito doesn't send Luca Brasi to try and spy on him first? Because that's the decision that really sent things spiraling out of control for the family.
Do you think that was a good call by Vito? Or did he jump the gun?:jbhmm:
i came in to ask a question revolving that incident... how did sollozo and them know brasi was there to spy on them?

edit: shyt is answered in the thread :heh:

It all went down hill when Sonny spoke out of turn/interrupted the Don during the sit-down with Sollozzo. Sonny expressed that he liked the deal and Sollozzo peeped that.. The Don scolded Sonny but the damage was already done. After the Don rejected The Turk at the sit-down he then knew he had to get rid of Vito to make the deal go through. Plus the other families were involved and Vito was the wrench in the whole plan for everybody.. also he thought the only person he had to worry about the hot head Sonny only.. nobody saw the wild card of the family, Micheal(who wanted nothing to do with the family business), stepping up to the plate-making chess moves- and crushing them all in the end.

Vito sending Luca to see The Turk was just to feel him out. Remember they didn't find out Luca was dead til later.. In the book The Don wasn't really a fan of Luca.. he was a psychopath and the Don was a tad bit shook of dude.. At the meeting Luca wasn't really on his "P's & Q's" when he met up with Sollozzo.. he was matter of fact the whole family was slippin'. They didn't take the Turk serious. Vito caught up at the outside market. Tommy Hagen out shopping without a care in the world. Sonny flying off at the handle- didn't foresee the other families getting at Carlo. Fredo being Fredo. If it wasn't for Mike the Corleones would've been bushes

At the end of the day... even if after the drug meeting Sollozzo was going after Vito (which is an assumption) that move was still a long ways off. Even if Sollozo had the business backing of certain families you can't just take out a don and think everything is gravy.

If anything Vito jumped the gun by sending Luca in. Luca was just at your family's wedding, has years of loyal service under his belt, and even took a private meeting with don, and now suddenly he's dissatisfied with the family? You think the other family's didn't know that Luca was at the wedding and took a private meeting with the Don? The whole thing was sloppy imo.

If Sollozzo was going to eventually come after the Don then the Don should have taken it slowly, rocked him to sleep and picked him apart. Sending Luca in was rushed and a declaration of war from Sollozzo's point of view and Sollozzo reacted accordingly.
