Questlove need to wash his fukkin face..annoyin ass nikka..
Questlove is overthinking this shyt and fails to realize that Hip Hop from its inception always has maintained as in hia words a hierarchy of HAVES and HAVE NOTS...
The Harlem urban disco scene ran by the likes of hip hop pipneers such as DJ Hollywod..Eddie Cheba and Dj Pete Jones and Lovebug starski were all about maintaining the status quo symbolized by bottles of Moet Champagne....Gator Shoes ....flashy silk suits and slacks and fly rentals
While the less privileged and younger B boys from the bronx such as Kool Herc..Flash...the Rock Steady Crew were stuck having to entertain themselves with the parks sipping on 40s and smoking dirt weed while spinning on the floor
so wtf is questlove talking about?!?!
He act as.if HIP HOP originated as a SOCIAL MOVEMENT for the underclass which is false
HIP HOP has always been about money and status along with elements of social awareness and personal responsibility
its about balance..unfortinatly the scales have been tipped to the money side cause HIP HOP is now CORPORATE
And Questlove is part od that corporate problem too
because them NBC checks are capable of having him do some strange questionable things![]()
evolving to a cultural phenomenon. So hip hop becoming corporate, in and of itself, is not a problem. The problem is that as it became corporate, by and large a certain TYPE of hip hop became acceptable. This form was one that was largely materialistic, misogynistic and self loathing in it's view of African American culture. questlove is the quintessential, hipster, hypercritical, lame, pseudo-intellectual, aggy, lame
this dude has spent his whole career taking shots at artist and yet working with them or dikk ridng them later
fat, lupus faced bama
Who’s to blame? It’s hard to say. Certainly, Puff Daddy’s work with the Notorious B.I.G. in the early '90s did plenty to cement the idea of hip-hop as a genre of conspicuous consumption. Before those videos, wealth was evident, but it was also contextualized, given specific character that harmonized with the backgrounds of the artists. Run-DMC had East Coast cool and cachet; Dr. Dre had West Coast cool and cachet. But Puffy had — and wanted to tell everyone he had — a different idea of power, an abstract capitalist cachet. His videos, and the image they projected, played as well in California as in New York, as well in Chicago as in Florida. It was a cartoon idea of wealth, to the point that specific reality no longer mattered. In literary terms, it was pure signifier. It would take him a little while to formulate that into a manifesto, but when he did, he hit it on the nose. “Bad Boy for Life,” in 2001, contained a line that says all that anyone needs to know about this strain of hip-hop: "Don’t worry if I write rhymes / I write checks.” Picasso, baby.
i'll spare you the long reply/addition but lets keep it funky:Questlove is overthinking this shyt and fails to realize that Hip Hop from its inception always has maintained as in hia words a hierarchy of HAVES and HAVE NOTS...

he refrences Lil Boosie counting money out on the pavement as such an obscene gesture...
when i recall BUSY BEE counting out a bundle of cash at a hotel room as if he.just hit a lick in the 1982 movieWILD STYLE ....
i also recall LL COOL J saying on ROCK THE BELLS....
"Some girls like me

and thier boyfriends dont"!
So why is questllove acting like this is a new concept'?!
HipHop unfortunatly has ALWAYS been a.capitilist tool
and at its base level living in a.capitilist society has always been about pbtaining things from a.classist perspectivw
thats why his analogy of the ADIDAS SHOE being embraced by Run Dmc.as a sign of comnection between the artists and fans is bullshyt.
because even the Adidas shoe at that time WAS A STATUS SYMBOL to many POOR KIDS such as.myself growing up during the Golden Era of the 80s
Only cats that i knew that had the shell toe adidas at that time were the older cats who had jobs or the d boy crack dealers
old school group DIVINE SOUNDS said it best;
"50 Dollar sneakers and you got NO JOB
TELL ME HOW U DO IT WHEN TIMES ARE HARD?"
and thats feom thier hit track "WHAT PEOPLE DO FOR.MONEY!"
So questlove needs to wake up outta that psuedo hip hop purist.mindstate and.realize

Picasso Baby is just the apex of this "out-stunt the next guy" pissing contest that's been going on in Hip Hop since the beginning.Questlove is overthinking this shyt and fails to realize that Hip Hop from its inception always has maintained as in hia words a hierarchy of HAVES and HAVE NOTS...

this is a GROSS miscategorization of what happened in the mid 70's/early 80's. MOST of the artists in Hip hop during the early days were trying to make a social statement or escape the harsh realities of the ghetto. They were not in it for capital gain.
If anything hip hop started off as a way to have fun.
I disagree with "always"...again that's just not true. Status, yes, money, no. As for the balance...I couldn't agree with you more. This has been a criticism of Rap since the early 90's. It really hit home when people like Vanilla Ice, Hammer and Young MC had singles that went Diamond. After that is when rap crossed over to bigger and broader audiences. Keep in mind that after this cross over success, Rap, became HIP HOP. I make the distinction because, we saw a shift in rap (emceeing) getting combined with a hip hop's style of dress, slang (remember ebonics)evolving to a cultural phenomenon. So hip hop becoming corporate, in and of itself, is not a problem. The problem is that as it became corporate, by and large a certain TYPE of hip hop became acceptable. This form was one that was largely materialistic, misogynistic and self loathing in it's view of African American culture.
As we stand today, people like Questlove and Roots don't go against a "truer" form of hip hop. They still value social awareness (Undun) and give back to the community on a regular basis. Just because they are on a Night Show with Jimmy Fallon that continues to make jokes about 'old school' hip hop that doesn't make them c00ns. If anything, it shows their appreciation for the "The Roots" of our culture.

was just as much a part of hiph op as it's social awareness.

Not to be offensive but it sounds like you subscribe to this "romanticized" view of the Old School hip hop days, which is more "idealistic" than realistic.. also it's very LIMITED because you only speak of the "b-boy" experience, but Hip Hop was much more broad than that..... :Patrice"
and Before I even respond to your diatribe. .i must ask you this :
HOW OLD ARE YOU???..........and WERE YOU PRESENT DURING THOSE VITAL PERIODS WE SPEAK OF?
Because I can validate what I speak of because I was there!!!
And I'm secure enough with my age and maturity to say that I'm approaching 40 was born in 1974 to be exact.......and I was raised on 166th and Washington during that time period and on up thru the golden era of the late 80's and early 90's prior to my transition to the south.......
To say that early b-boys and B-girls were NOT in for some type of capital gain is foolish.......
Considering all the mobile jocks in the Bronx of which one of whom was my uncle were getting PAID to set up their sets and play music whether it was in the parks, community centers or what ever local club would be willing to accommodate them.
And it was every young B-boy's dream especially mine to be featured or at least get heard on a phone in with father of hip hop radio..Mr. Magic on the legendarywith the super-stunting Frankie Crocker as the lead P.D whom was very inspirational to hip hop with his fly guy attire and beautiful chicks and hot rides to match.![]()
This is that FLY SIDE of hip hop that YOU OBVIOUSLY ARE EITHER UNFAMILIER WITH or CHOOSE LIKE MOST HIP HOP PURISTS SUCH AS QUESTLOVE ignore....
Clubs like Smalls Paradise, Nells, Bentleys and a host of others were the stomping grounds of cats like DJ HOLLYWOOD, EDDIE CHEEBA, PETE JONES and host of others whom brought the PARTY/DISCO vibe to HIP HOP which was basically about STUNTING AND FLOSSING .....
I remember cats like my uncle who got dressed to the nines, listening to disco breakbeats while popping moet bottles and wearing gaudy jewelry and riding in the fashionable whips of the day....
Not everybody in hip hop was rocking Sneakers with fat laces and Jogging suits like they at a damn track meet.....
hip hop was also about GETTING FLY and imitating the elitism that they seen others obtain in manhatten...
so just as much as we had the B-BOY you had the FLY GUY who listened to breakbeats in suits and drank top shelf liquor and champagne:

You have to realize that HIP HOP was birthed during the DISCO ERA...so it's influence of partying , materialisim and can't forget the DRUGSwas just as much a part of hiph op as it's social awareness.
Why you think their so many disco aliases in EARLY HIP HOP?
the Disco Twins....the Fatboys formerly known as the Disco 3
in fact HIP HOP was so indistinguishable from disco cause many rappers simply rhymed over disco breakbeats...that it wasn't called hip hop during those days in the 70's and early 80's ...it was actually known as simply "THE JAM"...
And the "the jam's" were basically lively get together's were people not only enjoyed the music and danced but also showed off ther FLY GEAR
RUN D.M.C described it best..." I got a nice long caddy...kinda like a Seville ...written right on the side..it reads DRESS TO KILL!!"
So miss me with all that "Hip Hop was STRICTLY a conscious movement of artists making social statements MYTH"
Yes of course it was fun and entertaining...but even yourself admitted that their were trying to "escape the harsh realities of the ghetto" and what better way than to financialy empower themselves ($$$).
It was more than just some artistic outlet or hobby..as evident in the testimony of hip hop's first official "emcee" ......
Coke A La Roc whom stated that he used the parties he mceed at to help market his WEED that he was selling at the time....
and it's funny that you posted audio clips of Grandmaster Flash and Melle Mel , because who was it that was hanging out with Supreme McGriff and other infamous dope dealers of NYC at these club spots......here is a clip of Busy Bee on stage with the Supreme Team at the same party Melle Mel attended at the :10 mark:
....dope boys , rappers and deejays and hustlers of all types fraternized together in the street culture of the BX at that time...and just as the street cats was after that "guap" so where the rappers and deejays...
such as Melle Mel who wanted to battle KRS for money.....just as most of the battles of that time were...basically PRIZE FIGHTS for the spectators...
you have to realize all these "arists" came from POVERTY STRICKEN BACKGROUNDS ...money was always a motivation ALONG WITH ARTISTIC EXPRESSION...![]()
Let's start here. I can tell that your way of trying to invalidate my point is to think I wasn't around. WRONG. I was check below to help illustrate that point.

You LIVED it...but like anything else in life, some of your POV is subjective.
Funny thing is..when you look at your post and what I posted. We're not that far off in what we're saying. My main point of disagreement was your claim that HIP HOP has ALWAYS been materialistic and NOT about Social Awareness.

thats just the way it was back them
