Quick Math help, apples

Ms Duff wants to give her students some apples. If she gives each student 7 apples, there will be no apples left. If she gives each student 4 apples, there will be 18 apples left. How many students are in Ms. Duff's class?

You have to multiply 7 by a number and 4 by that same number until the difference between those two is 18. I just worked my way up

what if the question was "f she gives each student 400 apples, there will be no apples left. If she gives each student 243 apples, there will be 87 apples left. How many students are in Ms. Duff's class?"

the numbers in my question won't work but i'm trying to say that the way you did it only worked because it was small scale.

there must be a formula to find the number of students.

I have no idea. Those numbers are too high and probably not consistent, but through trial and error. You'd have to first find the value to make sure it can even be equated

x/y=x/z+18 with the condition that y and z have to be known and must be whole numbers.
