I'm not here to say good or bad or be the conscious person but in your opinion do you think it was by design or was it an original creation?

I heard back in the slave days they use to call each other man after every sentence because massa would call them boy.

Nice topic. I never looked too deep into most of the examples listed, but I’m bothered by how imaginative we can be for words that are explicit meant to be negative. I’m talking shyt like ā€œthotā€, etc. What's the opposite of that kinda shyt? We literally don't have the words.

I think more and more about culture being something we can willfully manipulate, and phrases are the mode we use to communicate it, so intentionally creating phrases to express a desired outcome could do a lot more than we honestly know

Just saw a sista with a bad bytch on her license plate ole c class leaning to the side with doughnut and hauling like she's being pursued .

It's one thing to be creative but some individuals make a strong effort to embody certain aspects.

it's a natural part of language called amelioration/pejoration and it's much more common the other way. i don't think there's anything good or bad about it.

edit: thought of a couple examples, "terrific" and "awesome" used to be extremely negative and aren't anymore

I agree that it's by design. I've been more deliberate about the language I use over the past two years. I refuse to refer to myself or any other Black person as the n word.

That "term of endearment" excuse is straight up nonsense

Black people were 100% "tricked" into calling THEMSELVES the Nword. This was done mainly through media (comedians, blaxploitation films then ultimately rap music).

This was done by design but the elite who understand the power of words. The Nword is a literal curse to black people. Think about how much negative energy is behind that word when we use it towards each other.

The myth that black people as a collective made a conscious decision to reclaim and "take the power" out of the word is just that... A myth.

Can somebody provide the receipts to this meeting that took place where black people came together and decided to start calling ourselves the Nword? When and where did it take place? We're flyers handed out? Is there any audio or visual proof of this meeting?

Are you serious? 2x
You didn't know this?? :mjtf:

I'll never forget the random YouTube comment I saw of an aspiring rapper saying how he was pressured by his CAC record label to use more N bombs in his raps. And this was recent. If I remembered the actual video I would screenshot it and post it.

Not sure how old you are, but what you're doing here is a bit of deflecting.

NWA and associated acts blew up with very little promotion and little airplay on radio or video. They sold more units than the most popular rappers who had big label backing, promo budgets and airplay.

Ever since then, artists and labels saw that there was a big audience for that type of content and language and they used parts of that formula.

And when another act blows up and sells major units, labels try to capitalize and sign artists or select songs from upcoming albums that fit the formula.

When Onyx came out, you saw much of the next crop of artists yelling and screaming on record for the next year....for example. And talking about violent content.

Groups I mentioned came out in the late 80s and the early 90s. But the profit motive attached to catering to what the audience responds to is as old as the record business.

YouTube videos about label "paying" somebody to use certain songs on a record wouldn't be a reveal, nor would it be relevant to the thread topic, in my opinion.

Youth is always creating new slang, reinventing terms, adopting regional slang from elsewhere.

"By design" implies that the kids are just puppets being remote controlled by outside forces.
