i just installed windows 10 on another computer and it claims to be activated without even asking me for a key. did I just deactivate the other machine I already installed 10 on?

you need to provide more context, is this a brand new laptop that is updated from 8 to 10, or an old laptop you're updating

no, a desktop. bought/came with oem 8.1 several years ago. we bought win10 to do a fresh install on another desktop a few months ago. installed it and entered the product key. now this machine, the one with 8.1 oem, I just installed that same copy of win10(usb) and when finished checked system information and it says it's activated. never even asked me for a key

I think it's because it came with 8.1 oem so windows doesn't give a shyt about a fresh 10 install. it just activates automatically

I was just concerned that it automatically transfered the license over to the 2nd machine and deactivated the other one. but I checked the key in command prompt and it's a completely different 5-digit group from anything on the win10 key, so i'm guessing it's part of the 8.1 oem key

i'm pretty sure theres a free upgrade to win10 for win 8 systems. i think support for 8 ends in 3 or so years, and i keep hearing they don't have plans to do anything but patch and update win 10 on an ongoing basis. so the imperative is to provide as many free updates as possible.
