Another entry in my R&B series where I ask the heads of this sub their thoughts on certain figures in the genres history. Today it will be Joe

1.)Do you consider Joe to be a legend?
2.)Does he have a classic album?
3.)Where does he rank in his generation?
4.)How big was he at his peak?

Joe is the stark example of if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it…

U can play any Joe album based on your mood. Dude didn’t have to sellout to pop. He stuck to his guns.

U never really heard any trouble from Joe plus God rewarded him with that G-Unit connection because of the royalties alone.

Joe is one of the greats. The crazy thing about Joe is that in my opinion, his most unknown album(debut) is his best work. He had a lead single with "i'm in love" that was decent and got a lot of play on BET. The problem with Mercury, being the shytty label that they are, weren't releasing the best songs as singles. An "all or nothing" remix was saved the album and it was 10x better than the original, which wasn't bad btw. But songs like:

it's alright
get a little closer
I can do it right

were stuck on the album and the singles weren't pushing people to buy the album!!! My mom bought the album when I was in high school off the strength of the lead single and I played it more than she did. Joe's\Intro\ H Town\Toni Braxton debuts and 2nd albums from R Kelly/Jodeci/ Mint Condition were my favorite r&b albums of 93. And yes I still own physical copies of all these. Joe is definitely a legend

Okay -

1. I am of the opinion that everybody can’t be a legend. Legend has to do with your story/come-up to power.
That said, Joe is probably the last of the true legacy R&B males.

2. Joe has one MASTERPIECE (All That I Am),
another classic (My Name Is Joe),
Better Days which may be his best album outside of All That I Am, but I don’t think enough people realize that so
I won’t call it a classic. (IMO - Classic is about reception/impact more than the quality/content)

3. It’s hard to place him because he spans generations. Remember, he came out in 1992.
But he does great as a collaborator. He seems to be in his bag as a producer and writer with and for other artists.
I loved his track on Tony Thompson’s album. I prefer his version of “Missing You” to Case’s.
Every song he made with Chico DeBarge is a classic that shoulda went triple. They shoulda did an album together.

4. What do we consider his peak?

We do know he crossed over. White people know Joe. They know “I Wanna Know” because that was a prom jam.
They know him being on the cut with Mariah & 98 Degrees. They know “Stutter”. They know “Still Not A Player”.

His commercial peak was probably 2000-2003: the My Name Is Joe era.

But from 2003-present, he was one of the last ones making traditional R&B during the era of li’l nasty niccas taking over.
He gets credit for that.
