This man actively receives political advice from the spirit of his dead dog whom he claims to have first met in their respective incarnations of gladiator and lion in Ancient Rome and you are trying to parse his actions

[Quoted tweet]
I genuinely don’t understand why Milei would ruin his somewhat globally positive reputation over a crypto scam. Then again, I am no stranger to politicians disappointing me.

@Flyingclameleon
I hope this is some weird coincidence cause I had good hopes for Milei and liked his reforms so far.

The funniest part of crypto is that the people who make money on rug pulls are just people who already have money, not even new people doing the scamming

It's very funny and sad that the only reason this man is as popular as he is because he brought down inflation. It's basically destroying Argentina, but inflation was hated so much it has helped his popularity.

Riots at demonstration against low pensions in Argentina

Demonstrators and police clashed violently in Buenos Aires on Wednesday during a protest against low pensions amid austerity measures implemented by Argentina's right-wing libertarian President Javier Milei, with at least 124 people arrested and 46 injured.

Police fired tear gas and rubber bullets at the protesters, who threw stones at the officers and set fire to a police car and rubbish bins, as reported by the newspaper La Nación. According to the paper, the police arrested at least 150 people and several people were injured in the clashes.

Argentina's Security Ministry spoke of 124 arrested in a statement late on Wednesday. It also said that 26 members of the city security forces and police were injured and taken to hospital, including one person who suffered a gunshot wound and underwent surgery.

The ministry also reported 20 injuries among people it characterized as protesters, including one in serious condition. Local media reported that a photographer covering the protest was in critical condition after being hit in the head by a tear gas canister.

Numerous football ultras were among the demonstrators, the ministry confirmed. The so-called "Barrabravas" have a lot of influence in Argentina and have contacts in the criminal underworld.

Members of various left-wing groups and trade unions also took part in the demonstration in front of the congress building, according to media reports.

Argentinian trade union federation CGT condemned in a statement what it called "savage actions" by the Milei government "violently, senselessly, and illegally repressed today's demonstration in Plaza Congreso."

The union accused police forces of using "brutality" to repress the demonstration, injuring people "including pensioners, protesters, media workers, and even some unsuspecting pedestrians in the area."

Buenos Aires Governor Axel Kicillof also condemned the "ferocious, illegal, and premeditated" repression of the protest.

"A barrage of violence against pensioners and citizens protesting against the austerity measures," the governor said in a post on X. "What happened today is an attack on fundamental democratic rights."

"While a photographer fights for his life, government spokespersons lie, justify violence, and spread hatred. This authoritarian rampage must be urgently stopped."

Milei took office in December 2023, and initiated radical reforms. Thousands of civil servants were dismissed, and social programmes were massively cut.

While his austerity measures significantly reduced inflation, they also stifled the economy. In this once-affluent country, now more than 50% of people live below the poverty line.

Argentine President Javier Milei was pelted with stones while campaigning near the capital Buenos Aires on Wednesday by demonstrators protesting a corruption scandal, AFP reporters said.

Milei, who was whisked from the scene by his security detail, sustained no injuries after his motorcade was attacked, presidential spokesman Manuel Adorni wrote on X.

Milei, who is campaigning for October mid-term elections, was riding in the back of a pickup truck and greeting his supporters in the city of Lomas de Zamora, 20 kilometres (12 miles) south of Buenos Aires, when protesters began throwing plants, rocks and bottles at his vehicle, journalists at the scene confirmed.

The vehicle carrying the president and his sister, Karina Milei, along with other officials, hastily left the scene.

Afterwards, scuffles broke out between supporters and opponents of the libertarian leader.

A female Milei supporter suffered rib injuries and was taken away by ambulance.

The skirmishes arose amid a scandal in Argentina over alleged corruption at the public disability agency involving Karina Milei, her brother's right-hand woman and presidential secretary.

Minutes beforehand, the president had addressed the scandal that erupted following the leak of audio recordings by the the former head of the disability agency, Diego Spagnuolo.

In the recordings, Spagnuolo claimed that Karina Milei pocketed funds destined for people with disabilities.

"Everything (the agency head) says is a lie," President Milei said.

Argentina’s libertarian president goes on defense as a corruption scandal spreads

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) — President Javier Milei of Argentina on Thursday fired back at his political opponents and defended his influential sister against claims that she and other close associates profited from a bribery scheme within the country’s disability agency.

In his first major remarks on the corruption scandal, Milei accused his rivals of orchestrating a smear campaign against him and his libertarian party.

“This week’s operetta is nothing more than another item in the long list of schemes by the ‘caste,’” Milei told business leaders at a trade conference, using his preferred term for Argentina’s left-leaning Peronist opposition that has dominated politics for decades. “Like all previous schemes, it’s another lie.”

The crisis swirling around the government has put Milei on the defensive and threatens to sap popular support for his party just as the political maneuvering is heating up in advance of two key electoral challenges.

Argentina’s most populous province of Buenos Aires — a long-standing stronghold of Milei’s Peronist rivals — will elect local councils and provincial lawmakers on Sept. 7. In October, the country holds national midterm elections in which Milei seeks to expand his party’s minority in the opposition-controlled Congress.

Both votes are widely seen as a referendum on the self-proclaimed “anarcho-capitalist,” who has won praise for eliminating Argentina’s chronic fiscal deficit and taming severe inflation but faces growing pressures as economic growth sputters, foreign currency reserves dwindle and average salaries lag behind pre-Milei levels.

The corruption scandal erupted last week when local media published leaked audio messages in which the former director of Argentina’s disability agency, Diego Spagnuolo, can allegedly be heard discussing a kickback scheme in his organization benefiting the president’s sister and closest adviser, Karina Milei, and other senior officials to the tune of up to $800,000 a month.

Milei fired Spagnuolo from the disability agency after publication of the audio messages. Authorities are investigating the recordings and raided several homes and offices across Buenos Aires. Prosecutors have not yet filed charges.

“We regret that judges have to waste their time on the most rancid political tricks instead of pursuing crime,” Milei said on Thursday.

The president first broke days of an unusual silence on the issue Wednesday, denying the allegations to a reporter during a campaign event shortly before being evacuated as protesters hurled stones at his motorcade.

Another campaign event featuring Karina Milei grew tense on Thursday when protesters thronged the street, shoving and shouting insults at pro-Milei supporters. Again, Karina Milei was whisked off in a black van away from the crowds. Police reported at least three arrests.

Milei government panics after fresh leak of Karina audio

Emergency summit at Casa Rosada after fresh leak of audio recording; Top advisers and Cabinet officials discuss leak of Presidential Chief-of-Staff Karina Milei appealing for unity.

An emergency meeting took place at the Casa Rosada on Saturday as President Javier Milei’s government reacted to the leak of another damaging audio recording.

Cabinet officials and top advisers were summoned to Government House for talks on how to address the controversy, which erupted after a domestic streaming outlet released audio recordings that allegedly capture private conversations inside the Casa Rosada.

One of the clips features a voice attributed to Presidential Chief-of-Staff Karina Milei. In it, the President’s sister – who is at the centre of a developing corruption scandal – appeals for unity from government officials and says she is working long hours.

The situation has caused deep concern within the ruling party, which is seeking to contain the political fallout and prevent the leaks from escalating.

Rumours abide that further audio and video clips could be published in the following days. Casa Rosada sources privately acknowledge that the situation could worsen in the days ahead.

Government officials are angry at the leak and concerned that their conversations behind closed doors may no longer be private.

Presidential Spokesperson Manuel Adorni branded the leak “an unprecedented scandal.”

If the audios are genuine, we are facing an unprecedented scandal. It would be the first time in Argentine history that an official has been recorded inside the Casa Rosada,” said Adorni in a post on social media.

“The release of these audios, just ten days before the Buenos Aires Province election, confirms that everything that has been happening is part of a staged and orchestrated disinformation campaign, with the clear aim of destabilising the government and maliciously influencing the electoral process,” he said, making a thinly veiled reference to existing corruption allegations.

The Milei government is already struggling to deal with a developing corruption scandal prompted by the release of damaging audio recordings believed to have been made by the former head of the ANDIS national disability agency, Diego Spagnuolo.

In them, Spagnuolo links Karina Milei and other top officials to corrupt practices at ANDIS in the procurement of medicine and other services.

Speaking to a radio station on Saturday, Cabinet Chief Guillermo Francos suggested the new leaks were the result of a “political operation” mounted by sectors of the opposition.

“If you ask me whether I rule out people in government being behind this, yes, I rule it out,” Francos told CNN radio.

He also criticised those who had spoken of an “internal operation” within the Executive, saying such accusations “make no sense.”

The Cabinet Chief admitted that if the audios did originate within the Casa Rosada, it would be a “serious” and “unprecedented” development.

He said an investigation will be handled by the courts and the intelligence services, noting that both officials and visitors could be responsible.

The audio recordings, published on Friday by Carnaval Stream, feature Karina Milei urging unity within the government. “We are not going to get into a fight, we have to stand united, just imagine,” she is heard saying.

In another excerpt, the Presidency’s secretary general describes her working day of over fifteen hours. “Because I go in at 8am and leave at 11pm from the Casa Rosada,” she says in the eight-second clip.

Unlike the Spagnuolo audios, Karina’s recordings make no mention of bribes or alleged irregularities at ANDIS. The official only appeals for cohesion within the ruling team.

Presenter Mauro Federico, who made them public, said these clips were just “the tip of the iceberg” and that more recordings could be released in the coming days.

He explained that the full audios could add up to 50 minutes of material from internal meetings in public offices.

Police carry out raids as Milei sister graft probe continues

Police on Friday raided the offices of the ANDIS national disability agency and Suizo Argentino, the pharmaceutical company at the heart of a developing corruption scandal embroiling President Javier Milei's influential sister.

The allegations against Karina Milei, her brother's right-hand woman and presidential chief-of-staff, are the most damaging yet involving a member of the Argentine leader's inner circle.

The La Libertad Avanza leader and his sister were pelted with stones while campaigning for midterm elections this week in a suburb of Buenos Aires, amid widespread anger over the affair.

In leaked audio recordings, Karina Milei is accused of receiving a three-percent cut on the amount paid by ANDIS for the purchase of medicine from Suizo Argentina.

The allegations emerged in leaked audio recordings in which a man – attributed in media reports as Diego Spagnuolo, director of the disability agency – is heard saying: "Karina gets three percent."

Spagnuolo was fired after the recordings became public.

Karina Milei has not publicly commented on the claims.

Javier Milei told reporters on Wednesday that "everything [Spagnuolo] says is a lie" and vowed to "bring him to justice."

Suizo Argentina has also denied any wrongdoing.

Milei's top spokesman Manuel Adorni has portrayed the affair as an attempt by the opposition to discredit the maverick economist in an election year.

On October 26, Argentina holds national midterm elections elections. On September 7, voters in Buenos Aires Province will take part in provincial vote.

The elections are the first major tests of Milei's support since he took office in December 2023 on a promise to revive Argentina's ailing economy by slashing public spending and red tape.

The 54-year-old has managed to bring down stubbornly high inflation and produce a budget surplus but his austerity measures have left many vulnerable Argentines, particularly the elderly, worse off than before.
