Report: Former Tiger Tony Phillips dies
:mjcry:

Former major leaguer Tony Phillips who was a member of the 1989 championship A's team has died of an apparent heart attack, according to a San Francisco Chronicle report. He was 56.

He was a career .266 hitter with 160 home runs and 819 RBIs in 18 major league seasons. He finished his career with 2,023 hits and 1,300 runs.

Phillips played five seasons with Tigers (1990-94), batting .281 with 61 home runs and 309 RBIs. His best season with the Detroit was in 1993 when he hit .313 while drawing an AL-leading 132 walks. He also played at multiple infield and outfield positions during his Tigers tenure.

His fiery personality and hustle on the field made him a fan favorite. He was known to frequently quibble with balls-and-strike calls with home-plate umpires.

He was the first pick (10th overall) of the Montreal Expos in the 1978 amateur draft. He made his major league debut in 1982 with the A's where he played for eight seasons (1982-89) before joining the Tigers.

Phillips also played for the Angels, White Sox, Blue Jays and Mets before rejoining the A's in 1999.
