That's because people like to pretend they don't know history and purposely misuse terms like pedophile. Back in the day girls were getting married and having kids at 14 to 16. High schoolers were openly dating guys in there 20s. Like others have mentioned many of our great great grandparents got married young like that. Would you guys call your 25 year old great great grandfather a pedophile if your great great grandmother married him at 15? Girls get pregnant at that age all the time even now cause that's after puberty. The definition of a pedophile is someone who has sex with and attracted to kids who have not yet gone through puberty. What he is guilty of is potentially violating the age of consent laws in the USA for the state he was in. Age of consent laws vary state to state and in countries around the world. Believe it or not in Japan the age of consent is 13. In Italy its 14. Canada is 16. Philippines is 12.

Unfortunately as you can see there is no world wide consensus on what the appropriate age is to consent. USA is actually on the higher side.

And just because the government says 18 or 17 or whatever is fair game doesnt mean that person is mentally ready. Everyone matures differently. There isnt some magic that happens at 18 were every person becomes mentally mature. Its an arbitrary age were the govt says you are on your own. That doesn't mean a 40 year old person cant take advantage of an 18 year old the same way they can a 15 year old and inflict the same damage mentally and be a predator. Thats why I brought up the Seinfeld example.

i mean if you want to look globally it seems as if we like to infantilize our society when it comes to some things and not others. I don’t think a person should be considered an adult until 21. But if you are going to make it 18 it needs to be across the board.

Anyone under 21 or 18 should not be allowed to date anyone above.
