Jane Doe #5 testifies during R. Kelly's sex trafficking trial at Brooklyn's Federal District Court on Aug. 24, 2021, in a courtroom sketch.

BROOKLYN, New York — A woman who said she experienced years of degradation and abuse while living with R. Kelly acknowledged that she’d previously defended him publicly, telling a court on Tuesday that at the time she’d been isolated and conditioned by him into doing exactly as he told her.

“Everything was at his discretion,” said the 23-year-old, who identified herself in court by the pseudonym Jane.

After meeting Kelly when she was a 17-year-old aspiring singer, Jane became one of the “girlfriends” who lived with Kelly and were allegedly subjected to authoritarian rules on who they could talk to, how they could dress, and even when they could use the bathroom. Federal prosecutors, who have charged Kelly with sex trafficking and racketeering, said the abusive “sex cult” amounted to a criminal enterprise. On Tuesday, Jane explained why she did not believe she could leave him and return to her parents, whom Kelly manipulated her into doubting, even allegedly telling her once they had sold her to him in exchange for narcotics.

“He would say that we were worthless and that we did not mean anything to them,” Jane said. “He would basically say they had sold us to him … and that we were in a better situation with him.”

After moving in with Kelly when she was a teenager, Jane’s connection to the outside world grew more and more distant. She could only call her parents on the phone with Kelly’s permission, and he would tell her “exactly what to say” during the conversations,
she said. He would regularly disparage the women’s parents, Jane said, and if the woman did not agree with Kelly’s characterizations, he would punish her for not being “loyal” enough.

Eventually, she said she was forbidden from contacting them at all, and Kelly allegedly told her he had engineers who could check the women’s phone records to see if they were secretly communicating with anyone.

In January 2019, Surviving R. Kelly, the explosive docuseries featuring several of Kelly’s former associates and alleged victims, debuted while Jane and another woman were still living with the singer. Kelly allegedly told them they were to “immediately change the channel” if it came on TV, and he began drilling the women on questions about their life in case they were asked by outsiders.

The following March, Jane and another woman who lived with Kelly were interviewed by Gayle King on CBS This Morning, during which they said they loved him and accused their parents of trying to blackmail the singer.

In her testimony on Tuesday, Jane said she had not been truthful during the interview. Kelly was present during the taping and watched them closely, she said, at one point intentionally coughing “to let us know he was in the room with us.”

Jane previously testified that Kelly beat her, forced her to do humiliation porn, and made her get an abortion when she became pregnant. She said she contracted herpes from Kelly, who regularly forced her to have sex and often filmed the encounters.

On Tuesday, Kelly’s defense attorney Deveraux Cannick questioned why Jane didn’t leave when Kelly first allegedly pressured her into sexual contact when she was 17, then why she continued to see him after he allegedly first slapped her. At one point, Cannick grilled her on how she danced at the concert where she first met Kelly, asking her multiple times if she had “twerked.”

Cannick also questioned her on her parents’ role in the relationship, particularly about business ideas they proposed to Kelly, which Jane confirmed included a food truck and a sex toy that synced to Kelly’s music. Jane also confirmed, when asked by the attorney, that her parents would beat her in order to make her practice singing.

One of the aspiring R&B artist’s songs was titled “Liar, Liar,” which Cannick used to imply Jane wasn’t being truthful in court on Tuesday. “Your single is called ‘Liar, Liar,’ correct?” he asked her.

Cannick also highlighted that Kelly and the women who lived with him would at times go to dinner, see movies, and visit the park together.

“Basically, you function as a family, am I correct?” Cannick asked.

“I wouldn’t call it a family,” Jane replied.

Kelly nearly always filmed their sexual encounters, she said. At one point, years into their relationship, she said he showed her a video of them having sex when she was still 17. “Look at how tiny you used to be,” she recalled him saying to her.:wow:

It was five years of physical, sexual, and emotional abuse, she said.

“I feel that I never deserved any of that,” she said.

Jane’s testimony on Tuesday also marked the first time one of Kelly’s alleged male victims was described. Prosecutors have alleged Kelly abused 22 anonymous victims, two of whom were male.

According to Jane, Kelly first made her have sexual contact with someone he called by the nickname “Nephew” as a “punishment” after she and two of the other women broke Kelly’s rule about not discussing their individual relationships with Kelly. Kelly filmed the encounter, the first of several he made the two of them have, she said.

Jane did not say how old Nephew was at the time of their encounter, but she suggested that Kelly allegedly began preying on him when he was underage.

“[Kelly] said that he had been grooming Nephew since he’d been young like me,” Jane said.

R. Kelly Survivor Says Singer ‘Had Been Grooming’ A Male Victim Since Boy Was Young
During the sex abuse trial, the Jane Doe said Kelly forced her to have sex with a man Kelly referred to as “Nephew” as punishment for breaking one of his rules.

NEW YORK ― The second survivor to testify in the R. Kelly sexual abuse trial dropped a bombshell allegation on Tuesday morning while on the stand.

Jane Doe, the fifth of six Does whose stories are included in charging documents, told jurors that Kelly did have at least one other male victim. Doe said that she was forced to have sex with a man Kelly referred to as “Nephew” as punishment for breaking one of the singer’s rules.

After Kelly spanked her and two of his other girlfriends for breaking a rule, Doe told jurors, Kelly sent Doe back to her hotel room for more punishment. “He said that I was the closest to him and I should’ve known better,” Doe said.

“He said he had been grooming ‘Nephew’ since he was young like me,” she said, adding that Kelly told her “not to embarrass him” and please Nephew sexually like she pleases Kelly.

Doe said Kelly came into the hotel room with Nephew, who was naked. Kelly took off his clothes as well, she said, and started filming Nephew and Doe having oral sex. She said Kelly instructed them on what to do to each other as he filmed.

When prosecutors asked if Doe wanted to have sex with Nephew, she responded: “Never,” adding later that “it was punishment.”

It was not clear what year or where these alleged incidents took place. Doe said she was forced to have sex with Nephew multiple times throughout her five-year relationship with Kelly.

Doe is the second victim to take the stand. She said she met Kelly in 2015 at one of his concerts when she was 17 and he was 48 years old. Her harrowing testimony began on Monday morning and she recounted graphic sexual, physical and mental abuse. Her cross-examination from the defense will continue throughout the rest of Tuesday.

R. Kelly ex-girlfriend says she lied to Gayle King about his abuse in viral interview as singer looked on

All it took to scare R. Kelly’s young girlfriends during a high-profile interview with Gayle King was a quick cough from the singer, one of the women testified Tuesday.

The woman, who the Daily News is referring to as Jane, said on the stand that Kelly was present during the March 2019 sit-down on CBS and did a distinctive cough to remind his two girlfriends of his presence.

The two women adamantly defended Kelly and their polygamous relationshipduring the viral interview.

“He did a cough...There’s a very similar cough he does, letting us know he was in the room with us,” the woman, now 23, testified.

During the interview, Jane described her relationship with Kelly as healthy and dismissed her parents’ worries as an attempt to scam the R&B star.

“Were you being truthful when you spoke to Gayle King?” asked Assistant U.S. Attorney Maria Cruz Melendez.

“I was not,” the woman, now 23, responded.

The accuser, who ended her relationship with Kelly in October 2019, detailed more alleged instances of Kelly’s sexual and emotional abuse during a second day of testimony in Brooklyn Federal Court.

She said Kelly forced her to have sex with one of his male victims, known as “Nephew,” as punishment for her supposedly stepping out of line.

“He said that he had been grooming Nephew since he was young like me,” said the woman, who met Kelly in Orlando, Fla. and began having a sexual relationship with him when she was 17.

In one instance, Kelly and Nephew were having sex with her, then leaving the room, only to return for more sex. She later learned that Kelly and Nephew were also having sex with a girlfriend in another room, she testified.

“It was a punishment,” she said.

Kelly’s mental manipulation included the cruel claim that Jane’s parents had sold her to him for drugs, she testified.

“He confided in me that a previous manager named Mase had given my parents a few bricks in exchange for me,” she said.

Kelly allegedly gained control of his live-in girlfriends by making them feel as if their families did not care about them.

“He would say that we were worthless, that we did not mean anything to them,” Jane said.

Kelly, 54, is accused of trafficking women and girls for illegal sexual activity.

The abusive five-year relationship devolved into daily spankings, which Kelly called “chastisings,” Jane said. She recalled being forced to write letters to the allegedly illiterate singer begging for forgiveness.

“The defendant saw chastising as teaching,” she said. “It was to help me... remember the way to act and be.”

But in her frequent apology letters, the woman sometimes dared to challenge Kelly.

“Your pride and ego is involved,” she wrote in one undated letter. “As long as I’m still apologizing and accepting my chastising you should be happy... I’m not going to get spankings over and over because my apology isn’t up to your standards.”

As Kelly’s career collapsed in early 2019, Jane said he dismissed the upcoming “Surviving R. Kelly” documentary series as “false.” Sources previously told the Daily News that the federal investigation began after a Homeland Security Investigations agent watched the documentary.

Jane began speaking with federal prosecutors in January 2020, a few months after she left Kelly, she testified.

On cross-examination, Kelly lawyer Deveraux Cannick suggested that the girl’s parents were trying to get close to the “I Believe I Can Fly” singer to make money.

Jane admitted under questioning that her parents asked Kelly to “endorse a Bluetooth dildo” that would sync with Kelly’s music when in use. He rejected the idea.

“He just said it was not something he could ever do,” Jane said.

Nikkas on here aren't looking at this objectively, and they're not giving r Kelly his right to a fair trial. They're just letting thier bottled up emotions take over because they don't like r kelly to begin with. You can't expect them to use logic. So there's really no point in arguing with them

How should we look at it?

I'm a big kellz fans, you can look at my posts about him from almost 10 years ago before this drama. I feel like kellz is a monster, or his family created a monster. He was abused by his own sister as a little 6,7,8 year old boy. TERRIBLE my nikka. that shyt created a real life demon. fukk r. kelly's sister, sick bytch.

Kelly’s tour manager has testified under oath, reluctantly, that he bribed an official to change Aaliya’s date of birth on the marriage certificate. From 15... to 18 so she could marry R. Kelly.

She was 15.

R. Kelly was an adult.
Even if you didn’t know anything else... what else would you really need to know?

Yes. Everybody here is just a player hater.

We all bumped R. Kelly’s music and even visited his concerts. His music is fire.

So this is NOT about “hating” this is about reality

basically this is a case where they legit tossed any charge possible they could at him not even based on the complete elements...But whatever they can get him convicted of they will likely max him. Some of this stuff is frivolous to be honest. But something will likely stick. I can almost guarantee that the defense will have their hands severely hand cuffed when it comes to cross examinations.

It's legit people out here still thinking he's on trial from that previous case. And they will bring that up when it isn't relevant to this case.
On cross examination today R. Kelly’s lawyer asked the defendant about attending an R. Kelly
concert and specifically “if she twerked” at this concert.. so your “almost guarantee” was completely off.

You’re dying on the completely wrong hill.
