Fair enough. Ethiopia was occupied in 1936 and WWII started in 1939. That's at the shortest point just 2.x years. That's not long enough to refashion a country in your image or to fully vassal-ize it. Plus it was Italy and not one of the more dominant / capable counties (e,g. France / UK).

The fleeting nature of the occupation is why Ethiopia remains largely untouched by Italian culture and maintains its original languages, writing system, religion, calendar and cultural sense of self. Go speak Italian in Addis-Ababa and see how far that gets you.

Care means the US does not feel the need to be heavily present and invest in Africa the same way it did in Europe and in Asia.

Because China and the US are the only countries able to put the investments needed in big african countries. Since the US does not have huge interests in Africa, african countries have no choice but to cooperate with China.
