But I will say, I'm actually frustrated with how this is discussed because it gives racist cacs an out. No one would argue that Haiti is not a great place to live at the moment for a variety of reasons.
This isn't even the worst thing about what he said but this is the failure of the news media for overemphasizing the least scandalous part of what he said which further cements what I think most people have an issue with Trump on. Not so much what he believes or says, but that he doesn't have the "decency" to hide it in euphemisms and double speak like most politicians. He is actually bluntly saying what they all believe. This is where the news media fails and enables the underlying issues.
The problem was what he was quoted as saying afterwards and the other words around the word shythole.
He said
"Why are we bringing people from these shythole countries here"
"Why not bring more people from places like Norway".
Three things. The implication is that somehow being from a "shythole" country should prevent you from immigration and that your immigration will be a negative and turn the new country into a shythole doesn't bear out in the statistics when you consider for example Nigerian immigrants are the highest performing immigrants not to mention other immigrants who have accomplished things come from countries that can also be argued as being shytholes.
The second is the following comment about more people from Norway and less people from Africa which means the goal isn't minimizing immigration but to increase the white population. Whether that individual actually contributes which as previously stated, many African immigrants actually do, does not matter. The only thing that matters is they have white skin.
Thirdly, the reason places like Haiti are shytholes is because policies by countries like the US and France who made it a mission for more than a century to make them into shytholes. But no one ever wants to talk about that.
The thing is though, the only thing the newsmedia cares about is that he used the word shythole which may have been for some place like Haiti the most true part of what he said, not mentioning the fact the US is responsible for said state.
