ok so just so we're clear you're ok with the idea that we treated people like shyt in the past so we should treat people like shyt in the future? That's what i said and you said "yeah sure". You're going to go ahead and hold on to that argumentative point?
if you call pushing immigrants away from their native language getting treated like shyt then yeah i think immigrants should get treated like shyt, i think its a good thing that german, italian, polish and dutch have pretty much disappeared in the us, if those other languages were still prevalent and people used them as a form of identification and there were treated the same as english then there would be decreased social cohesion and governance problems in the us, and i think it will be good if spanish goes the same route as those other european languages
the multicultural notion that we need to elevate other languages is a dumb idea
I'm saying we HAVE a common language (english) by default, we don't NEED one and we sure as hell don't need an OFFICIAL language. A common language is a naturally occurring thing, and on that point i've always said 2-4 generations and immigrants tend to speak english as a primary language, even after things like ESL and all spanish speaking classes.
we have a common language because its been an unwritten american policy for the past 100 years that all immigrants get english shoved down their throat and its been understood for 100 years that you will lose your language when you come to the us, it is not natural, the us absorption of many immigrants is peculiar
the incentive remains. People learn language for a lot of reason, right now the reason isn't really a reason so much as it is a by product of integration. My whole argument is that we let language do what language does and let things unfold naturally.
that's ridiculous, multicultural or bilingual polices reduce the incentive to learn english, to argue otherwise is absurd
you are doing what mowgli was trying to argue before, he is suggesting that you can get the same result by changing the policy, which makes no sense
i have actually and i've said we have a COMMON language, we don't need an official language.
yeah and im saying that common language is english and it should stay that way
correlation does not imply causation. I'd argue that a common language isn't necessary, BUT, a common language(s) naturally works its way to the surface because of commerce. No need to force shyt
yeah exactly you are saying a common language is not necessary in the united states, i strongly disagree with that
and actually in a non homogenous society its doubly necessary and you do need to force shyt, by forcing it that is how the united states has survived
