It's iconic period...Thriller is a pop record and is more universally recognised.
The Purple tape and even Illmattic at one point was much more appreciated in the hip hop circle..in the early 90's..

you claim it to be an iconic piece of work in respect to ALL OF MUSIC when your initial post just said "Only Built is iconic in the hip hop world.." implying it's only iconic in respect to that genre and listeners of that genre, seems to me you are doing some backtracking here.

The Illmatic doc is dope and serious. Ghost's wit alone could make this one epic, as long as it's done right. Hopefully Nas does an interview since he's on the album.

I grew up on this album!!
I'm an old head. I was in college when OB4CL came out. It was an era where classics were being dropped left and right and THIS album was a cut above. nikkas literally changed their whole style up b/c of this album. Nobody was really into the mafioso shyt before this album. Cats didn't have multiple names/personas for themselves before this. Cats are still doing shyt today that started with this album.
