I honestly believe that early NY rappers took a lot of the rythyms they heard in jazz music and rapped over them 
I've heard a lot of the triplet, eighth and sixteenth note flows used by rappers in guitar and saxophone solos

1. if u don't know how to count bars then u don't know music theory it's fundamental to music theory plain and simple.
2. duration has nothing to do with counting your bars your not listening to the song to see how long it is
your listening to the song for kicks and snare and your counting bars ot see where to place the rhymes at
3. rakim was rhyming all over the place never placing his rhymes on just the snare aka the 4 in 4/4 time but all over the beats he had odd time signatures
4..music theory is not "pitch" it's cadence meter rhythm tempo time signature
5. last but not least his structure in terms of how he flowed over instrumentals and what he rapped over was ahead of his time and u did put words into my mouth
i said just count his bars and look at his bar structure in terms of how he rhymed over beats like where he placed his rhymes the bpms he wrote to
