Greenhornet
A God Among Kings
Lil Uzi aint even top 5 in his class
Rakim didnt need to adapt because he was literally the only bridge in hiphop
Imagine the power to take a culture and a whole movement at its peak
and completely do alfred hitchcock shyt to it and make it so much better technically, and map out the vibe and structure of it for the next 30 years
He is similar to MJ with seeing him at the time was like watching a person that stepped out of a time machine
None of these new cats are doing anything new at all, thats why they went through the rockstar phase... they couldnt cope with not being shyt
so they didnt even label themselves as rappers. Alot of weaker or should I say (unpopular) underground shyt from late 90s and all that overly abstract shyt
mixed with wayne's free form flow is all these dudes replicate. A few artists rap rap, but like Jcole, Kendrick and whatever... they arent from an era where they have shyt to say... they just rap about everyday shyt.
They are dope, but none of their songs hold weight or have a style that fits their vibe, because they dont have a vibe at all. Compare Tribe to RUNDMC to Outkast, they all have definitive sounds that are easily recognizable and easy to point out. Nowadays you can only say styles by "oh this is strip club music" "oh this is a pete rock introspective rip off" "oh this is forced abstract music" you can plug and play different artists into each box without having the unique flavor that makes us feel music. Every genre has had unique flavor, its why when you listen to jazz you can tell the artists without them saying one word. Rakim not only came and changed shyt at the perfect time, he also sounded perfectly unique and generic at the same time... his sound was midnight and his rhymes reflected exactly where he took us. Kind of how Gangstarr just sounds like pure great hiphop, nothing fancy just that perfect shyt. Certain artists have that perfect timing and vibe, like RUN-DMC. They check all the boxes at the perfect time.
