If you hammered a free throw hard against the top middle of the square on the backboard shouldn't it bounce back to you? You could also try doing it against the front of the rim but that would be a hell of lot harder.

How don't players know how to miss free throws?

you cant just throw it off the backboard. it's a violation
you have to atleast hit rim in something that atleast resembles a shot.

I used to be able to throw the ball off the rim pretty much every single time I wanted to, the front of the rim, shyt would come back to me like a homing missile.
