So disregard positioning yourself for an uncontested board and instead only count contested rebounds?
Why not ignore both and just track players that box other players out and allow a lot of the uncontested rebounds in the first place?

For defensive rebounds, yes.
You can do both - track actual contested defensive rebounds and box out rates.
