Day one Nip fans more than likely are going to name one of the "bullets aint got no name" mixtapes. His flow and lyrics were more raw during those years. But Nips found himself once he dropped "the marathon". Once he dropped the gang banging on wax content his career took off. Remember Nipsey and jay Rock dropped during the swag rap era and gangsta rap was not popping in those years especially from west coast cats. As we saw both Nips and Rocks careers took off once they switched up they content.

I’m a day one but I went with The Marathon over Bullets Ain’t Got No Name. For me I loved the growth Nip showed with The Marathon & I think a lot of day ones will agree.

The marathon to me - at the time issues with Big U, issues in his hood, leaving sony/epic etc a lot was going on and you can hear it in the music.

I do like the bullets aint got no names series though - volume 1 & 2 was raw.

Outro on volume 1 is still one of my favourites shows the growth ' I aint no role model, I aint on no positive sh!t' to me is nip at his rawest. It also shows the growth from that to what he became.

Wish him and cuzzy made a joint tape :mjcry:

Last thing I’mma say is nikkas need to start putting more respect on Mailbox Money. He was really talking that talk throughout that entire project.

Mailbox Money is so disrespected and underrated. :wow:

Not saying it’s the best but it’s for sure in my top 5.

One of the nuances I always enjoyed on Mailbox Money were the interview clips at the end of some songs of Nip speaking.

It’s as if Nip knew they would have greater significance one day.

Nipsey changing the status quo around here when discussing discog I've noticed in multiple threads :leon: good to see.

#mixtapesmatter

If you really think about that 2009-2010 crop of artists (Nipsey, Wiz, KRIT, Spitta, etc.)..their “mixtapes” tend to have the sequencing, originality, and cohesion of albums.

There’s no way I could look at Kush & OJ, Return of 4Eva, or Crenshaw as just another mixtape.

hard for me to do because each era of nips music has different meaning to me and was received differently

- bullets series, that's what put me on to him, sitting there living in DC and i see this snoop looking dude spitting raw ass gangsta shyt over kriss kross and was like the west is byke :banderas:

- marathon & TMC were some deep motivational tapes that gave nip more depth and allowed me to continue being a fan, if he were still on that bullets shyt, i may have grown out of him

- crenshaw, slauson boy 2 and maibox money is when it all came together for him - the hustle and entrepreneurship, motivational tracks, still connected to the street, but also making music that just sounded so good (a lot of smooth joints from this era and songs that appeal more to women...not that this ever mattered to me, but it's a plus on occasion)

- then you have VL, waited 3 years for that so first listen was a bit of letdown, but when i came back to it a few months later, that album came together perfectly and represented everything about Nip including all the work he put in to build up to that moment.

but to pick my top 5: bullets 2, marathon, MM, slauson b 2, VL

Crenshaw for me. His voice had matured by then and his content a bit too. It has a lot of really good songs. It was a great project, 4.5 mics at least and could even maybe elevate over time. That shyt was brilliant to me. It's by far his best to me personally, the production was excellent, a lot of fun listenable songs and he was flowing nicely, it was balanced and a nice range. It reminded me of like his All Eyez On Me, am not comparing the 2 projects, just saying it had that kind of a vibe to me, there was some really dope party joints, some deep joints, that solidified him in my mind as an artist to take seriously. Saw a lot of growth and potential.

The one with “7 Days A Week”, “Love”, Keys 2 The City”, “Blue Laces”, “I Don’t Give A Fucc”

Real ones know Marathon is his magnus opus, the perfect balance the between old-hungry-gangbangin Nip and the new-wise-motivational Nip

Was havin a discussion with my homeboy. He thinks Victory Lap is the perfect exclamation point on Nipsey’s musical legacy.

I agree...however, the fan in me wants to hear whatever’s in the vault. If they were to put together a project, I’m sure the best producers would put some glorious production behind Nip’s voice. shyt would sell half a million first week and his fam would eat well off of it.
