While AEOM and Chronic were blockbuster classics that dominated the streets and charts with huge singles

I don't think it's a fair comparison between The Chronic and Illmatic anyway. The Chronic is a group project in all but name. It's about a bunch of brilliant rappers coming together under the incredible production by Dre. If you want to compare head-to-head with other albums it should go up against similar group projects, like something by Wu-Tang or Above the Law. Solo efforts like Illmatic are different projects. IMO if you get five or six world class rappers coming together on a project it's always going to be better than a GOAT solo album. How's one great rapper supposed to compete on his own against half a dozen collaborating?

Illmatic definitely wasn't a footnote when it dropped it just wasn't a mainstream success which means it wasn't popular with a white audience. But the album was so good that the anticipation for IWW was like no album before it.
How does an album that was a footnote have a documentary on it?
When I hear it playing through my iPod and I got my earphones plugged in, I swear the lyrics have this effect. It's like I straighten my back more and walk proud. So inspiring

MAW was really who Pac was. Lets not forget that quite a few songs on AEOM were already other people's songs

Except Book 2 doesn't nearly hold up as well as Book 1, and you probably know this. Which is why you didn't mention the undeniable tracks on Book 2.

The Chronic, outside of a couple brilliant songs, hasn't aged well.
Yeah I don't understand why people say it's Pac's weakest album. He wasn't at the top of his game as a rapper then but the message on that album is so much better than all his subsequent releases, even though they were better from an artistic viewpoint 2PN was better from a sociopolitical viewpoint.
