:dahell: nikkas actually don't like craven's production on this son? wow

anyway jd's revenge is amazing, that choppy slight off kilter soul sample is the perfect backdrop for ran's crack and he let it go. run up on you in your booth and treat your medulla like it's lincoln's? lmao stop it man that's disgusting. i knew misery was gonna be off the meats when i saw the tracklist so of course him and spesh let it fly. still deciding who had the better verse but ran known to catch you slipping on his features so only right if spesh gets him back lol

but my favorite is hereditary oh my god son. this nikka ransom nickname needs to be big kool g pun, every last bar is perfection and technically elite. i need him to work with madlib and do a joint with bad lieutenant, benny, spesh, and royce for the all the chips when it comes to this lyrical crown shyt. great album, other standouts are gone girl and the shining. sonically it seems to lend to an emcee getting introspective with his rhymes and that's exactly what ran did. beautiful work man

Ran's lyrics saved this lazy project. Not even any backup rhythm such as a baseline or symbols, just straight loops.

This here.

But that's why you see everyone saying they're a "producer" now, because you can get away with being mad lazy now and people will still tell you your shyt is hot, lol. Someone that's never made a beat in their life, could literally learn how to loop in like 5 minutes. There's absolutely no skill involved in doing that, and people who've produced before know that. When you start getting into playing basslines, programming drums and chopping samples, that's when you're showing talent and skill. But the standard is so low today, and that's why a lot of dudes are getting over.

I don’t mind tracks without drums, but spend some time on that shyt. Flip it in a way that makes it uniquely yours. Don't just take a random part of something you heard on a record and loop it up and tell nikkas to rhyme over that for a whole project. It doesn't get any lazier than that.

This! I was saying in the Boldy/Versace thread that I think the drumless loops work best when they add variety to a project. Tea in China is a perfect example.

The album has three drumless loop beats. Two of them bookend the album as the first and final tracks, and the third is in the middle. The first one pulls you in and lets you focus on the rhymes. The middle one is great at mellowing things out following a run of hard songs. The last one is still kind of up-tempo so the energy doesn’t fall flat at the end.

I like these types of beats best when they help make for a dynamic and more interesting vibe and track sequencing.

But cats are really getting straight up lazy as hell with them. Thankfully on this project Ransom is more than dope enough to make me not mind.
