A Hardcore gamer plays and is good/great at almost everything. Most Hardcores are concerned with stats and are completionists.
A Professional gamer usual excels at one or two genres and may be sponsored. You'll find many Pro gamers who are hardcore to a degree.
A Casual gamer plays casually, usually doesn't take stats/trophies/achievements seriously and may not play much at all.

and wouldn't a hardcore gamer likely own most consoles and a PC?

and wouldn't a hardcore gamer likely own most consoles and a PC?

Considering that the majority of games hit each system eventually, no, it's not a pre-requisite to own them all. Hell, even in the past when there were a grip of different games on each system it wasn't necessary to own them all, as I'm sure everybody knew other people that owned consoles that they themselves did not own.

Also, while the desire to play most must play worthy games is liable to be in the heart of a hardcore gamer, no gamer, hardcore or otherwise would truly be able to or even desire to play absolutely ever game, even among the ones deemed 'Must Play/own' cuz everyone has different tastes, preferences, etc. and no one has the time or even outright desire to play every game to completion anyways and actually be proficient in every last one of them.

Ok with all this fanboy stanning on on both sides (Mostly Sony stans) I keep hearing if your are hardcore gamer, you have to go with the PS4. There's a assumption that the X1 is not for hardcore gamers. Now that the drm stuff is gone now its the multimedia and kinect that keep it being hardcore. I don't get it? How does having those features keep it from hardcore gaming? If a PC gamer builds a gaming PC it still runs Office products and play movies etc. Those functions do not tarnish its game playing abilities.

Now lets get to types of gamers. If a gamer plays sports, racing and fps he not a real gamer. But if you play rpg's, platformers and obscure games such Bayonetta then you are hardcore gamer? :what: I personally believe that if you but a lot of time into any game genre then you are hardcore gamer. Who says a hardcore gamer can't like the Nfl or the Nba. Sounds like the classic case of the nerds vs jocks. I'm I missing something? Help a brother out lol
somebody that plays games outside of the following series.
Madden
NBA 2K
Call of Duty
Grand Theft Auto
Assassin's Creed
Battlefield
Halo
Gears of War

not saying hardcore gamers don't play those but if you look at that list and that's basically all you play you aren't a hardcore gamer.

hardcore gamers are enthusiast that will typically buy a console at launch. they probably buy at least a game a month on average and i'd say at the end of the year they've probably bought at least 20 games. usually they own multiple consoles if not every console available.

See this is where we disagree. Why are those excluded from hardcore gaming? Because they are mainstream? If one puts a lot of time into their games there are hardcore to me.

i didn't say a hardcore gamer didn't play those but if you look at that list and that's all you play you're a more casual gamer.

its like saying you're a hardcore rap fan and all you listen to is Jay-Z, Lil Wayne, Rick Ross, and 2 Chainz. again not saying hardcore fans of rap don't listen to those artist but chances are if you actually like rap you've gotten deeper in it than only listening to mainstream artist.

Gang violence...
the most important point is that hardcore gamers put lots of resources into gaming. they dont treat it like a time waster, it is a main event worthy of setting aside adequate time and money.

the kinds of games hardcore gamers tend to play usually have a high ceiling for mastery. in other words, they tend to reward learning the game by having deep gameplay mechanics. this can be a tricky subject to judge, because some games seamlessly blend casual and hardcore gameplay. the most successful game franchise tend to be easy to play/hard to master. any 1st party Nintendo game, any sports game, rhythm games, and of course COD fit this description. in this case, both the hardcore and the casual can find something they like in the same product. sometimes the uber hardcore will hate on these kinds of games, but most hardcore gamers acknowledge their value (though these games can milk their successful formula too much)

casual gamers are not looking to spend much money and do not want to invest much time into mastering a game.

hardcore and casual are a spectrum, so there are degrees. some hardcore gamers are more hardcore than others, such as someone who plays lots of genres, or focuses so much time on one game or genre that they either become a pro or are seen as an expert on subjects relating to that genre or game.

some casuals are so casual that cheap games on a cellphone will suffice

I hear and feel what you saying. But this issue I have is that this can still be done with the X1 even with its kinect and multimedia tv features.
