Rant: What is a "Hardcore" gamer?

A hardcore gamer plays Playstation mostly because that is where there is variety.

A hardcore gamer is someone who doesn't own a Nintendo console.
A hardcore gamer is someone who doesn't only play Madden.
A hardcore gamer is someone who doesn't only play Call of Duty.

Seriously sick of this new generation of flakey, sorta gamers who think they're hardcore. (most people on this very site)

Not necessarily...

I'm sure many HC Gamers own and play across different platforms but the catalogs are so vast these days that more people stick to one or two. Games are more expensive and gamers are older these days, most of us who really invest in them are in our 20s - late 30s.

At this point I prefer PS3 and PC (Occasionally). If that makes me a fanboy, My problems with microsoft have nothing to do with the games or the gamers who prefer it.

not saying hardcore gamers don't play those but if you look at that list and that's basically all you play you aren't a hardcore gamer.

hardcore gamers are enthusiast that will typically buy a console at launch. they probably buy at least a game a month on average and i'd say at the end of the year they've probably bought at least 20 games. usually they own multiple consoles if not every console available.

See this is where we disagree. Why are those excluded from hardcore gaming? Because they are mainstream? If one puts a lot of time into their games there are hardcore to me.

he didn't exclude them he is saying if those are the only games you play you're not a hardcore gamer, hardcore gamers will play lesser known titles not just the big franchises

Thanks for your reply +rep. I keep hearing all this rhetoric PS4 is for gamers. Why is that?

One of the big things for me is that PS4 is likely to have better indy support from what I've heard...and I don't have the time to spend on massive games any more so the indy side is a nice affordable way to try games that most people overlook.

Other than that, the fact the X1 seemed to focus on your television and overall entertainment experience while PS4 talking gaming made me think that the PS4 is going to focus on the gaming experience more...so I'm going PS4.

Everyone is different so everyone has different gaming habits and I totally respect that. For example, some people don't have time to play everything they want to, so they choose one console to buy, own and play. Not because they can't afford the other but because they have enough to play with one console, why buy another?

Anyway, that said, I think there's something to be said for the enthusiasts that play a wide variety of games. They're not any more "hardcore" than anybody else but I relate it to people that listen to a lot of different rap. They'll tell you about everything from ATCQ, KRS and Public Enemy to Fresh Prince to Black Hippy to Little Brother and MF Doom, etc. There's a knowledge set there that exists thanks to their eclectic tastes.

The reason people are looking at the ps4 as the hardcore gamer box is because of history. Sony has a history of getting behind games that are more for hardcore gamers than MS. They have a more diverse catalog of games and greenlight games that would get laughed out of the building by MS.

Add to that the indie support they're showing and the fact that they really haven't talked much about non-game related functions of the box and have kept it mostly about the games, and that's why it's looked at as the hardcore gaming box
